LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo turned the corner at halftime to overcome a slow start and claimed a 12-10 win over Johns Hopkins at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Bison (9-4, 4-2 CWPA) set a season high with 15 ejections drawn and took advantage of its extra-man opportunities to erase a three-goal deficit from the first half in the process. Bucknell will now look to a 5 p.m. matchup with George Washington in its third of four home matches this weekend.
Bucknell was 8-for-14 in 6 vs. 5 situations for the game. Jack Else had a major hand in those chances as the sophomore drew five ejections, tying the team's season high. Else had set the original mark against Harvard in September and now has a squad-best 29 ejections drawn.
It was one of those opportunities when the Bison had extra manpower that pushed them toward their comeback. Julian Colina scored with Bucknell two men up to tie the game at 6-6 midway through the third quarter. Johns Hopkins' Johnny Beal followed up with his own goal to put the Blue Jays (10-9, 2-3 CWPA) back in front, but the Bison answered twice more in the final 1:20 of the quarter to take their first lead of the day. Trevor Reitz netted both goals for an 8-7 Bucknell lead heading into the final stretch.
After being outscored 6-3 in the first half, the Bison returned the favor by a count of 5-1 in the third quarter. The fourth also went Bucknell's direction as the Orange and Blue scored three unanswered goals out of the break. Colina later tallied his team-leading third goal of the outing for a 12-8 score.
With less than five minutes to play, the Bison proved to be the stronger team in the late goings. By holding on to the victory despite two late goals from the Blue Jays, Bucknell evened the season series after an 11-9 overtime loss in Baltimore last month.
Bucknell continues play at 5 p.m. against George Washington. In celebration of their 1,000th game in program history, the Bison will be giving free t-shirts to the first 25 fans. Additional t-shirts will be available for $10.
