LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's track and field team won nine events and junior Dan Mularz (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) and sophomore Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) posted top-10 marks in program history as the Bison kicked off the 2011 portion of their indoor campaign Saturday by hosting the 10th annual Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Bucknell's nine victories were nearly split evenly between running events and field events as five came on the track and four in the field.
Junior Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) posted the Bison's lone individual win in the running events as he finished first in the 500-meter run in 1 minute, 6.53 seconds. He was the lone Bucknell runner in the 16-person field and had only one other competitor finish within two seconds of him.
Bucknell also won the 4x800 relay, claiming the first three spots, the 1,600 sprint medley relay, the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay.
Mularz posted the Bison's lone new top-10 time in the running events as he ran the 60 hurdles in 8.39 seconds, bettering his previous personal best by .02 seconds. He already ranked fifth in program history in the event and remained in that position.
"I thought it (the Gulden Relays) was an outstanding start to our indoor season considering the long layoff and the very hard week of practice," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "We had a lot of fun with the relays and our athletes really competed well. You could tell most of them worked out very well on their own over the three-week break. It was a great rustbuster."
Isaih Bell (long jump), Joseph (weight throw), Tom Barr (shot put) and Drew Fitzgerald (high jump) won the field events for the Bison. Barr, who threw 50-10 ¼, led a 1-2-3 sweep of the shot put for Bucknell as Quinten Marcott (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) finished second and Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) claimed third. He also finished second in the weight throw behind Joseph.
Joseph, who was the Most Valuable Men's Field Athlete of the Meet, had a strong showing in the weight throw as he won with a toss of 56-9 ½, nearly three-and-one-half feet ahead of his previous best that ranked 10th in program history. He now stands seventh on that list, two spots ahead of Barr.
The Bison also had plenty of depth in the long jump behind Bell's winning leap of 22-10 ¾ as freshmen Alex Prieto (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) and Ray Holmes (Campbell, N.Y./Campbell-Savona) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Additionally, Greg Barbier (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had a ninth-place showing.
Fitzgerald tied for first place in the high jump with a height of 6-6 ¼. Four of the time five heights belonged to Bison.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday at the Armory in New York City. The Bison's next home meet is slated for Jan. 22.
