LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo seniors Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) were named Honorable Mention All-Americans, it was announced this past weekend by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. It is the program-record third career citation for Hyden, while Kalter was honored for the first time.
Bucknell has now had multiple All-America selections in back-to-back years for the first time as Hyden, classmate Sean Coghlan and 2010 graduate Nick Donahue were awarded certificates in 2009. At least one Bison has been named an Honorable Mention All-American for five straight years.
Hyden is Bucknell's first-ever three-time Honorable Mention All-America selection, having earned honors in 2008, 2009 and now 2010. Garrin Kapecki (1987, 1988) was the only other Bison to be named Honorable Mention All-America twice, while the great Scott Schulte was a Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980.
In 2010, Hyden earned his third consecutive first-team all-conference selection, becoming the first Bucknell player to accomplish that feat since the mid-1980s.
The 2007 CWPA Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Eastern Championship selection, Hyden will graduate as one of the best offensive players in the history of the Bison program. He finished his career with 232 goals, 161 assists and 393 points, ranking in the top 10 in program history in each category. Hyden is seventh in goals, fifth in assists and sixth in points.
This past fall Hyden tied for the team lead with 52 goals, dished out a team-best 37 assists and registered a team-high 89 points in 27 games. He also drew 57 ejections, the second-highest total of his career, and a figure that ranks fifth on Bucknell's single-season list. Hyden's 186 career ejections drawn were a new team record.
A first-time all-conference honoree in 2010, Kalter earned his first career Honorable Mention All-America citation following a campaign in which he tied Hyden for the team lead with 52 goals, was second on the squad with 25 assists and registered his third consecutive season with at least 70 points (77). He netted at least one goal in 16 of the team's final 17 games.
Kalter finished his four-year career with 154 goals, 84 assists and 238 points.
A left-handed utility player who was Bucknell's first first-team all-conference selection outside of Hyden since 2007, Kalter posted 22 steals and a team-high 17 field blocks last fall.
Hyden and Kalter helped Bucknell to a 13-16 record in 2010 against a schedule that featured 13 nationally ranked opponents. The Bison advanced to the title game of the Southern Championships for the first time since 1998 and the semifinals of the Eastern Championship.
