LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's lacrosse coach Caline McHenry has announced that seniors Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland), Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) and Ashley St. John (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) have been elected team captains for the 2011 season.
"The best quality about these seniors is that they are selfless," said McHenry. "They constantly think about others first, and they take great pride when their teammates succeed. That kind of leadership is key, especially with the young team that we are going to have this season. Julia, Alyssa and Ashley are all outstanding players in their own right, and each brings a little something different to the table."
In addition to the captains, senior Christina Garman (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), sophomore Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) and freshmen Kerri Althouse (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Sophie Kleinert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) have been named Team Council members.
Braun will be in her second season as a team captain. She is coming off her second straight All-Patriot League campaign in which she led the Bison in virtually every statistical category. Braun finished 2010 as the team leader in goals (37), assists (10), points (47), ground balls (34), draw controls (48) and caused turnovers (22). She was one of only two players in the nation last year to lead her team in each of those six categories, joining Hofstra's Corrine Gandolfi.
Braun's 48 draw controls were tied for second-most in a season in program history, three shy of the record, while the 37 goals were tied for ninth-most. In 2010 Braun scored a point in 15 of the team's 17 games, and she registered multiple points 11 times. She posted a career-high nine points with five goals and four assists in a win over Howard, and a week later she had four goals and two assists against Colgate, giving her 15 points in consecutive games. Braun also had four-goal games against American and Wagner.
On Bucknell's career lists, Braun now ranks ninth in goals (89), sixth in ground balls (105), second in draw controls (133) and fourth in caused turnovers (62).
"Julia continues to be our most vocal and respected leader," said McHenry. "She works really hard, and her teammates admire her for that. On the field, quite simply she does everything for us. Julia has a passion for lacrosse, and it shows in the way she prepares and plays every day."
DeLorenz has played all but 34 minutes in goal over the last three seasons, including every second in the cage in both 2008 and 2010. As a sophomore she was named Patriot League Goalie of the Year and was a First Team All-Patriot League selection.
DeLorenz enters her senior season ranked sixth on Bucknell's career saves list with 484.
"Alyssa has done a great gob over the last four years," said McHenry. "She had to play every minute in goal as a freshman and really never had a chance to get her feet wet. She has really learned a lot about playing the position and about quarterbacking the defense. I think she is going to have a great senior year."
St. John has been a starter on defense in each of her first three seasons at Bucknell, and she is a projected starter once again in 2011. She is annually one of the team leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers, and this season she will be the veteran leader on a young defensive unit.
"Ashley is a very vocal leader and has been great guiding our younger defenders," said McHenry. "She is always very positive and encourages her teammates. She is a very good player in her own right and is going to be key for us this year."
The Bison are rebuilding after a 2-15 season a year ago, and this spring they will feature a roster with 14 freshmen. The season opener is Feb. 13 at home against St. Bonaventure at 12 p.m.
