Lucido Claims Bison Women's Tennis' Lone Win at Cornell Invite

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis got off to a rocky start in its first tournament of the spring season, earning just one win at the Cornell Winter Invitational on Friday. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) was the lone Bison to continue in the main draw, winning in straight sets in Flight A singles at The Reis Tennis Center.
Lucido defeated Yulia Smirnova of Binghamton 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. That gives the senior her fourth consecutive victory in singles dating back to the Bucknell Invitational last October when she won the Flight A title. The win also brings her career record to 71-29, putting her just two behind Chelsea Mills for fifth in all-time wins at Bucknell.
Lucido will take on Cornell's Christine Ordway in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Ordway knocked out Annie Hang of Army in her first round match, 7-5, 6-1.
Bucknell's next closest call with a win came at doubles, and Lucido was a part of that match as well. Lucido and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) fell 9-7 to Binghamton's Jillian Santos and Smirnova. It was the first time this year Lucido and Vidrascu partnered up in a tournament.
At the end of the day, Bucknell was 1-7 in singles and 0-4 in doubles as a team.
Play continues tomorrow. In addition to Lucido's quarterfinal match, the rest of the Bison will be active in the back draw. Doubles action gets underway at 9 a.m. with singles starting at 10 a.m.
