LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell fans all over the area will have plenty of opportunities to see the Bison track and field squad this weekend. In addition to hosting the Bison Open & Multi Friday through Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse, the Orange and Blue will also make the trip to the Penn State National Invitational in University Park, Pa., and the 104th Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. The full slate sets Bucknell up for its final tune-ups as it eyes the upcoming championship season.
MEN'S NOTEBOOK
- For the second week in a row, the Bucknell men's squad brought home the team title. A week after winning at the Armory, the Bison finished first as a squad at the Bucknell Heptagonal with 175.3 points. Second-place Duquesne closed out competition with 108 points.
- The men's 4x400 relay will be flying solo on Friday when it travels to Madison Square Garden for the Millrose Games. The last time Bucknell competed at the Millrose Games was in the two-mile relay in 1990. The Bison sent relay teams to the meet several times in the 1980s, but none did better than the two-mile relay in 1989. Mike Smith, Ted Neu, Mike Sgambelluri and Ken Sevensky finished second (7:44.37), less than :01 behind first-place Providence.
- A total of 15 men will be making the trip to the Penn State National Invitational. Among those is Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) who will compete in the long jump as well as the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. No other Bison will make a go of it in three events.
- Helping Bucknell to its team win last weekend was an individual victory from Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton). Joseph won the weight throw for the second time in three meets with a distance of 55 feet, 2 ¼ inches. The performance earned him a third consecutive Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet award. Joseph will compete in the weight throw at Penn State on Friday.
- Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) added to Bucknell wins list at last Saturday's Bucknell Heptagonal. The junior took gold in the 60-meter hurdles and the 500 meters. His time of 8.16 seconds in the hurdles was a personal best and ranks second in program history. Just as he did in the hurdles, Arent also ran an IC4A Championship-qualifying time in the 500 meters with a season-best 1:06.11. In the upcoming weekend, he will be making the trip to the Millrose Games for the 4x400.
- Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) has turned himself into one of Bucknell's top throwers. The junior has competed in both the shot put and the weight throw every weekend and has never placed worse than eighth. He has twice won the shot put, and most recently took second in the shot and fourth in the weight throw at the Bucknell Heptagonal. His weight throw mark of 50-10 ¼ last weekend was a career best.
- Barr is not alone in his success in the throws. Along with Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) and Quinten Marcott (Wayland, Mich./Wayland), the trio has helped the Bison go 1-2 in the shot put in every meet this winter. They even combined to claim first through third place in the first two competitions of the year. Individually, Barr has two wins, and Shapiro and Marcott each have one. Add Stephen Koullias (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) and Luke Webster (Pataskala, Ohio/Newark Catholic) to the mix, and the five shot putters have just two finishes outside the top 10.
- Jordan Donaldson (Saxton, Pa./Tussey Mountain) became one the latest Bison to add his name to the list of IC4A qualifiers last weekend. The junior was second in the 800 meters with a career-best time of 1:55.67 at the Bucknell Heptagonal. Donaldson had previously qualified for the championships meet in the 500 as well.
- Of Bucknell's nine individuals to qualify for the IC4A Championships in March, Chris Sacks (Pound Ridge, N.J./Fox Lane) is the only freshman to be included on that list. Sacks recorded a qualifying time of 2:29.16 in the 1000 meters two weeks ago, then repeated that success in the mile at the Bucknell Heptagonal. He finished second in the mile last weekend with a time of 4:16.48, showing some of the speed that he used to twice be named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week during cross country season.
WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK
- For the second year in a row, the Bison women finished runners up at the Bucknell Heptagonal last Saturday. Duquesne just edged out the Orange and Blue for the title 113-108.
- Twelve women will compete at the Penn State National Invitational this weekend. Among those competing in multiple events are Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's). The quartet will race in the distance medley relay in addition to individual events later in the weekend.
- Zymet claimed her first citation from the Patriot League on Monday, earning the league's Rookie of the Week honor. The award, which was the second straight for Bucknell, came after the freshman finished third in the 400 with the 10th-fastest time in program history at 58.28 seconds. It was the third straight meet in which Zymet had broken onto a Bucknell top-10 list.
- Zymet is just one of two Bison who have qualified for the ECAC Championships to date. Zymet met the qualifying mark in the 500 at The Armory on Jan. 15. She is joined by Casalnova in the 500 and 800 meters. The qualifying time in the 500 is Casalnova's latest contribution. The freshman finished third in 1:16.81 in the event last weekend.
- Autumn Schellenberger (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel Tate) became the latest freshman to add her name to the program top-10 list. Schellenberger tied for third in the pole vault last weekend, clearing 10-9 ¾, ranking her 10th all-time at Bucknell. She is now the fourth freshman to move onto a top-10 list this season joining Zymet (200, 400, 500, sprint medley relay), Casalnova (500, 800, sprint medley relay) and Emily Ando (Weston, Conn./Weston) (pole vault).
- Bucknell now has three current athletes on the program top-10 list in the pole vault. Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) is third (12-1 ½), Ando is tied for seventh (10-10) and Schellenberger is 10th. The only event being occupied by more current athletes is the 60-meter dash, including Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover) (2nd, 7.84), Christina Muccio (Andover, Mass./Andover) (3rd, 7.90), Jaime Rasmussen (East Berlin, Conn./Berlin) (t-6th, 8.00) and Olivia Massey (Westport, Conn./Staples) (9th, 8.04).
- Taylor Funk (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant Area) is not new to the top-10 list in the 60-meter hurdles, but the junior did improve her standing. With a mark of 9.16 seconds at the Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday, Funk moved into a tie with Kiley McDonald for sixth place all-time.
- A pair of Bison claimed their first wins of the season last weekend. Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) was the victor in the 5000 meters (17:55.57), while Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) won the 800 (2:18.00). It was the first time this season either of them had competed in their respective events.
LOOKING AHEAD
Bucknell's next meet was recently added to the schedule. A small contingent of Bison will make the trip to New Haven, Conn., for Yale's Giegengack Invitational on Feb. 5. The Bison will then wrap up the regular season with the Bucknell Winter Classic on Feb. 12 at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
