LEWISBURG, Pa. - With the help of a record-setting performance and an average of 20.0 points last week, Bucknell women's basketball's Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was named the Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week and the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. The freshman set a Bucknell record with 19 made free throws against Colgate on Saturday, adding to her list of accolades that also includes being cited as the top newcomer a league-best six times this winter.
Romine finished the contest with the Raiders with a career-best 28 points. Of that total, a majority came on free throws as she shot 19 of 21 from the line, including 9-for-9 in overtime. The 19 made free throws is a Bucknell record, topping the Bison's all-time leading scorer Molly Creamer, who was 18 of 22 against Navy in the Patriot League Tournament on March 7, 2003. Romine also tied the Patriot League record in free throws made - Erica Hayes of Navy also had 19 vs. Morgan State on Jan. 18, 2000 - and was one shy of tying Creamer's and Hayes' league record in attempts (22).
Romine's scoring production against Colgate powered Bucknell to a 76-66 overtime victory on the road, but the guard did more than just put points on the board. She also finished the day tying a career-best in assists with seven and added three rebounds and a steal in 45 minutes of play.
Earlier in the week, Romine helped Bucknell to its first Patriot League win of the season and its first road victory since last January with 12 points and seven assists at Lafayette. She also had seven rebounds, setting another career high.
At the end of the voting period, Romine had averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds in the Bison's pair of wins. She led Bucknell in scoring and assists in both games and played a team-high 42.5 minutes per game.
Romine's six Rookie of the Week honors is the most by a Bison since Lindsey Hollobaugh received the award eight times during the 2003-04 season. Romine earned her first two citations in the opening weeks of the season, becoming the first Bison since Desire Almind in 2000-01 to be named the top rookie in back-to-back voting periods to start the campaign.
The Bison Athlete of the Week award is the first of Romine's career.
With 17 collegiate games under her belt, Romine leads Bucknell in a number of categories this season. She is tops on the team in scoring (15.2), assists (3.2), steals (1.5), minutes played (38.4) and free throw shooting (.754). Her 3-point field goal percentage of .410 is number one among Bucknellians and ranks 44th nationally.
Bucknell will try to win its third straight game on Wednesday when it hosts Lehigh at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion. Kathy Fedorjaka will be recognized prior to the game. The head coach won her 200th game at Bucknell in the Bison's 57-49 victory over Lafayette last week.
