LEWISBURG, Pa. – It is just one week into the season, but Bucknell men's water polo senior co-captain Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) already has two weekly awards to his credit. Two days after being named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week, Hyden was cited as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Player of the Week.
A two-time Honorable Mention All-American, Hyden scored a team-high 13 goals and dished out three assists in four games this past weekend at the Navy Open. He helped the high-scoring Bison to a 3-1 mark. Bucknell netted 70 goals in the four games, an average of 17.5 per contest.
Hyden, who currently has 193 goals, 127 assists and 320 points in his career, moved into Bucknell's top-10 lists in all three categories this past weekend. No other Bison had joined any of the lists since 2000. He now stands ninth in program history in goals and 10th in both assists and points.
A left-handed attacker, Hyden posted four multi-goal performances at the Navy Open, highlighted by a five-goal outing against Queens. He also registered a pair of assists in that contest, giving him seven points, the most in a single game by a Bison all weekend.
In addition to his scoring output, Hyden drew seven ejections, including three against both Queens (N.Y.) and Fordham. He ranks third on the Bucknell career list with 136 ejections drawn in his four-year career.
The Bison and Hyden will get a chance to play in front of a home crowd for the first time this season this coming weekend at the Bucknell Invitational, which will take place at Kinney Natatorium.
