LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo senior co-captain Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Player of the Week and Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) copped honors as Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after solid performances at the ECAC Championship this past weekend.
Hyden totaled seven goals, four assists, two steals and four ejections in three games this past weekend. The left-handed attacker was the only Bison to score at least one goal in each match at the three-day event. He was one of three Bison with four goals in 21-goal outburst against George Washington. As a result, he now has a team-high 23 goals and is tied for team lead with 32 points this year. Thanks to his team-high seven scores on the weekend, Hyden's career goal total was pushed over the 200 plateau to 203, making him the ninth player in program history to reach that mark.
A two-time Honorable Mention All-American, Hyden earned his second CWPA Player of the Week citation this season.
Reitz earned his first career CWPA weekly honor after totaling five goals, two assists, one steal, one ejection drawn and going 1-for-1 on sprints in three games. Reitz was also one of three Bison to net four goals in the 21-3 victory over George Washington, as he recorded a new season-high mark. He is second among Bison freshmen in goals (10) and points (15), and has won 9 of 10 sprints this year. In addition to being a key water polo contributor, Reitz is also a member of the Bucknell men's swimming team.
Bucknell (7-4), which was ranked 20th in the latest national poll, finished in fourth place at the ECAC Championship. After defeating the Colonials in Saturday's opener, the Bison lost to Brown (11-7) and No. 17 Princeton (9-6). Despite the two losses to end the weekend, Bucknell posted its seventh consecutive top-five finish at the event.
The Bison will be on the road again this weekend as it opens up league play. They will face John Hopkins in Baltimore, Md., on Friday, Navy in Annapolis, Md., at noon Saturday and wrap up the weekend against George Washington in Washington, D.C., later that same evening at 5:30 p.m.
