PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Bucknell women's cross country claimed its first team victory of the year, defeating Duquesne and Pittsburgh at the Duquesne Tri-Meet at Schenley Park on Saturday morning. Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) earned her second individual win in as many meets, completing the five-kilometer course in 18 minutes.
With 18 points, the Bison bettered the Dukes, which finished a distant second with 40 points. Pittsburgh was third at the tri-meet with 84 points.
Fulmer's win was the second of her junior campaign as she also won the Bucknell Open two weeks ago. The strong start is a pleasant change from last year after Fulmer missed the beginning of the cross country season while recovering from injury.
Fulmer was not the only Bison to post impressive results on Saturday, however. Bucknell placed all five of its scorers in the top six overall. The Orange and Blue also earned seven of the first 11 places in the race.
“Our women ran a nice race. We are way ahead of where we were a year ago today,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “I was especially pleased with our overall depth.”
Finishing second overall was Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) with a time of 18:08. The finish marked the second time this season Moniz placed right behind her teammate Fulmer, and each race was decided by eight seconds or less.
Trailing Fulmer and Moniz was Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) in fourth (18:31), Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) in fifth (18:49) and Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) in sixth (18:53).
Bucknell will try to keep its early success going on Friday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for Lehigh's Paul Short Memorial Invitational. Races begin at 10 a.m.
