Bison Women's Tennis Opens Bucknell Invitational on Strong Note

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) earned wins in singles and doubles, and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) pulled out a victory in a lengthy match as Bison women's tennis kicked off the Bucknell Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Friday. The Bison claimed five victories as a team on the first day of the season-opening three-day tournament.
Tuzhikova and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) started the 2010-11 season with a win at doubles, defeating their opponent from Villanova 8-2. Tuzhikova later beat Alrissa Tobe of Duquesne in singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Dwojewski looked to be off to a strong start in singles, breaking Villanova's Amanda Nelson on the first service game. The Bison senior ultimately dropped the first set, however, 6-4. After winning the second by the same score, Dwojewski took the match 10-3 in the super tiebreak.
Bucknell's freshman also made quite an impact in their Orange and Blue debut. Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) defeated Sarah Kelly of Villanova, 6-2, 6-4 in the first singles match of her career. Elizabeth Morgan (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) also won, 6-4, 6-2, over Loyola's Gabbie Decarvalho.
Play continues at the Bucknell Invitational through Sunday. Matches will get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
