LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three Bucknell men's track and field student-athletes were named to the 2010 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday. Recent graduates Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) and Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) as well as junior Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) were among the record 357 athletes nationwide to earn academic honors.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, student-athletes must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and meet either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participate in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in their respective event.
Anthony, who was named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection last spring, posted a 3.55 cumulative GPA while majoring in English and philosophy and minoring in Spanish. The two-year captain claimed the long jump and triple jump titles at the 2010 Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships as well as the honor of Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet. The pair of victories gave Anthony a total of six individual titles in his career and nine All-Patriot League citations.
Anthony made his second NCAA Championships appearance in the triple jump in May, finishing 18th in the preliminary rounds in Greensboro, N.C. He finished his career second all-time in the indoor (49 feet 7 ¾ inches) and outdoor (50-6 ¼) triple jump as well as fourth in the indoor (23-11 ¼) and outdoor (23-11 ½) long jump.
Arent was also a Patriot League champion last spring while earning a 3.52 cumulative GPA. The rising junior won the 400 and 400 hurdles at the Outdoor Patriot League Championships in addition to placing second as part of the 4x400 relay and third in the 110 hurdles. His performance, which helped lead the Bison to their first outdoor title since 1991, earned him the title of Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet.
A chemistry major, Arent placed 27th in the prelims of the 400 hurdles at the NCAA Championships. He finished the year with the school record in the 400 hurdles (51.59 seconds). He also ranks second in Bucknell history in the indoor 400 meters (48.04) and outdoor 4x400 relay (3:13.66); third in the 60 hurdles (8.30), 300 meters (35.84), indoor 4x400 relay (3:16.82) and 110 hurdles (14.45); fourth in the 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay (30.64); fifth in the outdoor 400 meters (48.12); and 10th in the 500 meters (1:05.28).
Pierce closed out his Bucknell career with a 3.41 cumulative GPA as an interdepartmental studies major. The javelin specialist claimed his first Patriot League title last spring with a career-best mark of 225-1. That distance gave Pierce the third-best throw in program history.
Pierce made his third appearance at the NCAA Championships in May after also qualifying during his freshman and junior seasons. He placed 36th in the javelin in his most recent postseason appearance.
