LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team's 2010 campaign ended less than two weeks ago, but there have been plenty of offseason happenings around the program since the Bison's NCAA run concluded. Just this week Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) and Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) were named All-East Region by ABCA/Rawlings and former Bison Eric Junge '99 was signed by the Lancaster Barnstormers. Additionally, Shribman and head coach Gene Depew will represent Bucknell at the YES Clinic this weekend at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Brouse and Shribman named ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region
Brouse was named First Team ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region outfielder, while Shribman was a second-team choice at first base. It is the second honor of the week for Brouse, who was named Second Team All-ECAC on Tuesday. Brouse and Shribman provided plenty of power for the Bison in 2010, combining for 38 home runs, the most by any pair of teammates in program history. Shribman hit a school- and Patriot League-record 21 homers, while Brouse chipped in a career-high 17.
The Patriot League Player of the Year, Brouse hit .365 with 52 runs batted in and 60 runs scored. He was one of two Bison to start all 60 games and posted a .471 on-base percentage. The program's career home run leader with 30 over the last four years, Brouse finished his senior campaign in the top 10 of 10 different Bucknell single-season lists and in the top 10 of 13 career lists.
The Patriot League Tournament MVP, Shribman capped a strong season with a storybook postseason. After hitting 13 home runs during the regular season, he smashed eight in the postseason, including seven during a six-game Patriot League Tournament run. Overall, Shribman, a First Team All-Patriot League selection, hit .359 with 21 home runs and 62 RBIs. He started 59 games, scored 45 runs and racked up a Bucknell-record 160 total bases, eclipsing the previous mark by 30.
Eric Junge '99 Signed by Lancaster Barnstormers
Junge, a co-captain on the 1999 Bucknell squad that tied for the Patriot League regular-season title, was signed by the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball this week. It is the second consecutive season Junge has played with the Barnstormers. Last year, in just a month on the roster, he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance. He walked only nine and struck out 41 in 32.0 innings of work and twice tied the Barnstormers franchise record with 12 strikeouts in a game.
An 11th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft, Junge made his major league debut in 2002 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He owns a career MLB record of 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 10 career appearances.
Junge finished his Bison career with a 16-15 record and held the program record with 12 saves at the time of graduation. He was the first Bucknell player drafted by an MLB team since 1986.
Gene Depew, Doug Shribman to Represent Bucknell at NCAA Youth Clinic at College World Series
Depew and Shribman will represent Bucknell at the NCAA Youth Baseball Clinic this weekend at the College World Series. The clinic, which will take place at the Creighton University Baseball and Softball Complex, will run June 19-20.
Since its inception in 1985, the NCAA's Youth Clinic program has reached an unprecedented level of popularity. Each year, the clinics, held at select NCAA championship events, serve nearly 10,000 youth ages 10 to 16 who engage in fun and challenging sports skill, life skill and conditioning sessions conducted by top collegiate coaches and student-athletes. The clinics are another way these coaches and student-athletes share the NCAA's commitment to challenging young people to strive for higher levels of achievement in both athletics and academics.
Last year, Depew volunteered at the NCAA Youth Clinic with recently drafted catcher B.J. LaRosa and rising junior Bob Donato. In recent years, former Bison Matt Curry (2007) and Ryan Gryskevicz (2007) as well as recently graduated infielders Ben Allen (2008) and Ben Yoder (2008) participated at the annual event.
