LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell baseball seniors Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) and Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team, it was announced Thursday. It is the second consecutive all-district selection for both veterans, and it marks the fifth straight year at least two Bison baseball players have been cited.
The Bucknell baseball program has had at least one Academic All-District selection in 11 of the last 12 years. Overall, 39 Bison have been recognized a total of 58 times since 1983. To be eligible for a nomination, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.30 grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team.
A Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2008, Allen has had an outstanding senior campaign, hitting .329 with 45 runs scored, 11 doubles, six triples and 23 runs batted in. The shortstop is one of only two Bison, along with Brouse, to start and appear in all 52 games, and he will bring a consecutive start streak of 135 into next week's Patriot League Tournament.
Allen ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell single-season history in six categories this year, including at bats, where his 210 top the list. His career-high 69 hits rank third, while they also lead the team and are second in the Patriot League.
This year, Allen has posted a team-high 19 multi-hit games and leads the Patriot League with a career-high six triples.
A four-year starter, Allen ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell history of 10 statistical categories, and in the top five of six. His 212 career hits and 148 career runs scored rank second, while his 177 games played and 171 games started list him third.
Off the field Allen owns a 3.54 grade-point average while majoring in civil engineering. A four-time Dean's List member and a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Allen is a member of Chi Epsilon, a civil engineering honor society.
Brouse was a First Team All-Patriot League choice last year and is in the midst of a record-breaking season. The right fielder has already tied the Bucknell single-season home run record (14) and broke former teammate Jason Buursma's career mark. Brouse's 27 career home runs are three better than Buursma's total and just one away from equaling the Patriot League standard. He is the only player in program history with a pair of double-figure home run campaigns.
Among the Patriot League leaders in nearly every offensive category, Brouse is hitting .360 with 50 runs scored, 64 hits, 12 doubles, 14 home runs and 48 runs batted in this season. He has also walked 27 times and been hit by pitches 16 times. His .473 on-base percentage leads the team and is second in the Patriot League, while his .674 slugging percentage is second on the team and third in the Patriot League. Brouse is in the top three in the Patriot League in seven offensive categories.
Like Allen, Brouse's name is plastered all over the Bucknell record book. He ranks in the top 10 on Bucknell's single season lists in nine different categories this year, and his name appears on the top 10 lists of 13 career statistics.
Brouse is an economics and history double major and carries a 3.41 GPA. He has landed on the Dean's List three times and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice.
Thanks to Allen and Brouse, who will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration, as well as three Bison softball players who were named Academic All-District II on Thursday, Bucknell has now had 12 Academic All-District selections in 2009-10.
Allen and Brouse will lead the Bison into their third consecutive Patriot League Tournament next weekend (May 15-16) at Army. The first round, best-of-three series will begin with a doubleheader next Saturday at Doubleday Field against the top-seeded Black Knights. The last time Bucknell was the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament field it defeated No. 1 seed Army on its home field to advance to the championship series.
