LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Austin Winter (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes), a team captain and one of the all-time leading scorers in the history of the Bison men's lacrosse program, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in the Terrace Room on campus on May 4.
Winter won the Bradley N. Tufts Award, presented in recognition of exceptional athletic achievement and contribution to Bucknell athletics. Winter shared the award with Tania Varela of the women's tennis team.
In addition to Winter and Varela, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class. Patriot League and Eastern champion swimmer Courtney Warren and two-time All-America wrestler Andy Rendos won the Mathewson Awards.
One of the top scorers in school and league history, Winter earned a First Team All-Patriot League nod for the fourth straight year in 2010. The only other league player to do that was Army's Tim Pearson from 1999 to 2002.
For the fourth straight year, Winter was Bucknell's top point-producer in 2010 with 44 points on 21 goals and 23 assists. He is one of only three players in school history to record 100 career assists and finished his career ranked No. 3 all-time with 117. Winter's 194 points were fourth-most in program history. He also ranks fourth in assists and tied for sixth in points on the Patriot League all-time lists.
Winter had a point in every game in 2010 - and in 58 of his 59 career appearances. He had a nine-point game with two goals and a career-high seven assists against Lafayette this season, and he had seven points in a win over Lehigh and six in a win over Jacksonville. But of all the goals he has scored through the years, perhaps none was bigger than his overtime goal against Colgate two weeks ago that sent the Bison to the postseason.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 15 of 19 years.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rates. In addition, Bucknell ranks fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 118 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
