Bucknell Track & Field Opens NCAA Championships with Top-30 Finishes in Javelin, 400 Hurdles

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Bucknell track and field opened up competition at the NCAA Championships East Regional at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Bell Track on Thursday afternoon. Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) was 27th in the 400 hurdles, while Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) took 30th in the javelin on the first day of the three-day championship meet.
With a time of 52.34 seconds, Arent took fifth in his heat and just missed qualifying for tomorrow's quarterfinals in his first career NCAA Championship appearance. The finish caps off an impressive sophomore season for Arent, who will head into the 2010-11 season with the school record in the 400 hurdles (51.59).
Rycek's finish in the javelin came with a mark of 133 feet, 10 inches. The junior improved her mark with each of her three throws but fell out of the running for the finals. Rycek was making her second career appearance at the NCAA regional meet and the first since her freshman season.
Competition will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) will look to keep their success going in the javelin at 10 a.m., while Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) competes in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 8:30 p.m. The meet runs through Saturday, with Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) wrapping things up for the Bison in the triple jump at 12 p.m.
