LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell baseball's Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) continued his torrid postseason hitting this past weekend with three home runs, including what proved to be the winning homer in the decisive game of the best-of-three Patriot League Championship Series at Holy Cross, and was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. He was also cited by College Baseball 360 for the second consecutive week as a Primetime Performer.
Shribman, who helped guide the fourth-seeded Bison to their fifth Patriot League title overall and their second in three years, put together an unprecedented hitting display during the six-game, two-weekend Patriot League Tournament. The junior first baseman hit .423 (11-for-26) with seven home runs, 16 runs batted in and 10 runs scored. He posted a slugging percentage of 1.308 and did not make an error in 57 chances at first base.
This past weekend at Holy Cross Shribman collected just three hits, but he made each of them count as all three went over the Fitton Field outfield wall. After an 0-for-4 performance in Friday's game one loss, Shribman bounced back with a solo home run in Saturday's game two that staked the Bison to a 2-0 lead. He then followed with a pair of three-run shots in the final contest of the series. His first-inning home run put Bucknell up 3-0, while his home run in the seventh inning put the Bison ahead to stay at 9-7. Bucknell ended up claiming game three by a 12-7 margin and Shribman was named MVP and earned a place on the All-Tournament Team.
Among the many Patriot League Tournament records that Bucknell broke over the weekend were four individual standards by Shribman. He now owns the Patriot League Tournament mark for home runs (7), RBIs (16), runs scored (10) as well as RBIs in a game (6).
On the season, Shribman is now hitting .364 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs. He has accumulated 76 hits and scored 42 runs and owns a .737 slugging percentage.
Shribman's outstanding postseason has helped him climb higher on many Bucknell and Patriot League record lists. He is currently the Bison single-season leader in home runs, smashing the previous record by six, and ranks second in RBIs. His 76 hits rank third all-time behind only Mike McCarthy (1999) and teammate Ben Allen. Additionally, Shribman's 154 total bases are 24 more than the previous record that had stood for more than a decade.
On the career level, Shribman ranks second on the home run list with 26, behind only teammate Andrew Brouse. Entering this season the program's career home run record was 24. Shribman is also second in career slugging percentage (.659) and ninth in RBIs (102).
Shribman's name also dots the Patriot League record book as he stands fourth on the career home run list and is first on the single-season ledger. In fact, prior to this year no Patriot League player had ever hit more than 14 home runs in a year and both Shribman (20) and Brouse (17) have easily eclipsed that mark.
Bucknell will now await the NCAA Tournament selection show next Monday, May 31. The Bison will be making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance, having qualified in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2008. Bucknell upset nationally ranked Florida State in its last NCAA appearance in the NCAA Regionals. This year's Regionals will take place June 4-7.
