WEST POINT, N.Y. - Bucknell men's tennis won three singles matches but was outmatched in doubles, falling to Army 4-3 in West Point, N.Y., on Friday. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School), Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) claimed the Bison's (5-11, 1-2) victories in their first of two Patriot League matches this weekend.
Bucknell put itself in an early hole, suffering a sweep in doubles. Katten and Zimmer had the best look at No. 3 doubles, but still fell 8-6 to the Black Knights' Alex Holland and Tripp Johnson.
Katten got the better of Johnson at No.3 singles later in the day. The Bison freshman defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Cohenca and Zimmer had tougher times in their wins, as each came back from a set down and forced a super tiebreaker. Playing at the No. 2 position, Cohenca lost the first set 7-5 to Chris Albornoz. The match remained close, but the Bucknell player pulled out the 7-6 win in the second and ultimately won the finale 10-8.
Zimmer had nearly identical results at fifth singles. The freshman dropped the opening set 7-6 to Rashad Shelton before bouncing back 7-5 in the second. The match was decided by an 11-9 score in the super tiebreaker in favor of the Bison.
Bucknell will have a chance to get back on the winning track this Sunday, traveling to Lafayette for its final road match of the season. Match time in Easton, Pa., is set for 2 p.m.
