LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell claimed three of the four Patriot League men's lacrosse weekly award winners on Monday, with Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) taking the Offensive Player of the Week award, Alex Lyons (Owings Mills, Md./Boys' Latin) the Defensive Player of the Week honor, and Kyle Feeney (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) the Goalie of the Week award.
Bucknell won twice on the road last week, 11-9 at Penn State on Tuesday and 11-2 over Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday. Klipstein scored eight of the team's 22 goals in the two contests. He had three goals and an assist in the Penn State game and then logged five more goals against Holy Cross, including the game-winner. The Penn State game was tied at 7-7 in the fourth quarter when the Bison ripped off four goals in a row to take control, and Klipstein had a goal and an assist in that winning run.
A junior midfielder, Klipstein now has 28 goals this season, almost doubling his total (15) coming into the season. He now ranks second in the Patriot League and 14th nationally in goals per game, and he is one of the highest-scoring midfielders in the nation.
This is Klipstein's second career player of the week honor. The other came after his eight-goal performance against Lafayette earlier this season.
Lyons and Feeney were major factors in a strong defensive week for the Bison. Lyons copped his second player of the week award of the 2010 season as he continued to be one of the league's best takeaway defenders. Lyons had five caused turnovers and four ground balls in the Penn State victory, and he forced three turnovers and had a couple of ground balls against Holy Cross.
The junior ranks third nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.7) and is also averaging 3.0 ground balls per game.
A promising freshman goalie, Feeney has already been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week this season, and now he has garnered Goalie of the Week honors for the first time. Against Holy Cross, Feeney made 12 saves while allowing only a pair of goals. He also had seven saves in the win over Penn State.
Now 5-4 on the season, Feeney improved his goals-against average to a league-best 7.88, and his save percentage to .572, second-best in the league. Among the national leaders, Feeney ranks ninth in GAA and 12th in save percentage, and he leads all Division I freshmen in save percentage.
Bucknell is now 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison finish the regular season with three straight home league games, starting this Saturday against Army at 8 p.m.
