Bucknell Men's Lacrosse Gets Rematch with Army Friday in Patriot League Tournament
4/28/2010 8:00:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
April 28, 2010
For the third straight year and fourth time in the last six years, Bucknell and Army meet in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals Friday at Michie Stadium. The Bison have captured the last two postseason meetings, winning 10-8 as the No. 1 seed and tournament host a year ago and 8-7 at West Point as the No. 4 seed in 2008. This has been one of the nation's most tightly contested rivalries over the last decade. Of the 14 Bucknell-Army games dating back to 2000, 10 have been one-goal games. This year's regular-season matchup was no different, as the Black Knights rallied to win 7-6 on Tyler Seymour's shorthanded goal in overtime on Apr. 10 in Lewisburg.
It has been a season of survival for the Bison, who overcame several key injuries and five one-goal losses to make it back to the postseason. Needing a victory over Colgate on the final day of the regular season to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, the Bison withstood a furious Raiders rally and won 8-7 on Austin Winter's overtime tally. On the other hand, Army went 6-0 in the league, including four straight one-goal wins over Colgate, Bucknell, Navy and Lafayette.
With a Win over Army, Bucknell Would ...
... improve to 9-5 on the season, giving it nine or more wins for the fourth straight year.
... advance to Sunday's Patriot League championship game against either No. 2 Navy or No. 3 Lafayette.
... qualify for the championship game for the third year in a row.
... improve to 3-1 against the Black Knights in postseason play.
... defeat Army at Michie Stadium for the fourth straight time.
Scouting Army
For the first time since the Patriot League expanded to seven teams in 2000, Army finished with a 6-0 conference record and sewed up the No. 1 seed for the Patriot League Tournament. Army's six league wins came by a combined 11 goals, including four one-goal victories in a row.
Army finished the regular-season with five straight victories and has won seven of the last eight since a 1-4 start.
Patriot League Rookie of the Year Garrett Thul (34-8-42) is the team's top goal-producer, while First Team All-Patriot Leaguer Jeremy Boltus (23-31-54) leads the league in both points and assists.
Other top scorers are Tyler Seymour (16-6-22), who had the OT winner against Bucknell earlier in the year, Rob McCallion (6-13-19) and Sean O'Sullivan (13-5-18).
Army is very strong defensively and features the league's Defensive Player of the Year in Bill Henderson, a first team all-league defensive midfielder in Tim Henderson, and the second team all-league goalie in Tom Palesky.
Palesky has a .545 save percentage and a 9.42 goals-against average while playing all but 12 minutes in the crease this season. He is also a dangerous outlet passer who set up the Black Knights' overtime goal with a clearing pass in the earlier meeting with Bucknell this season.
On special teams, Army is converting 41.0% of its extra-man chances, while its opponents are at 32.8%.
Army has struggled a bit in the faceoff department in 2010. The Black Knights are winning 39.9% at the X. In the previous Bucknell-Army game this season, the Bison won 12 of 17 draws. In fact, in three career games against Army, Bucknell's Jake Clarke is 34 of 45 (.756) on draws.
Army senior defenseman Sam Harrison and Bucknell senior attackman Austin Winter were teammates at Mountain Lakes High School in New Jersey.
Bucknell Patriot League Tournament History
After three straight one-goal semifinal losses, Bucknell finally broke through in 2008 and made it out of the first round. The Bison did the same in 2009, but they have not quite gotten over the hump in terms of winning the tournament title. Bucknell is 2-5 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament.

Bucknell So Far
Bucknell has played 13 games thus far, eight resulting in victories and five in tough one-goal losses. Here are thumbnail sketches of the team's first 13 contests:
Duke 12, Bucknell 11 (OT): The Bison opened the season against No. 2 Duke at McEachern High School near Atlanta, and the Orange & Blue seemed poised for the upset after sprinting out to a 7-2 lead. They were up 8-5 at the half, but Duke slowly chipped away, tying the game for the first time at 9-9 midway through the fourth quarter. Chris Palmer and Austin Winter scored 12 seconds apart to put the Bison back up 11-9 with 5:03 left, but goals by Max Quinzani and Will McKee tied it back up with two minutes to play. Bucknell won the final faceoff of regulation and fired off four good shots in the closing seconds, but missed the cage on each of them. There was a heated scramble for the overtime faceoff, but eventually Duke's Parker McKee nabbed the loose ball and started a fastbreak, which Zach Howell finished 15 seconds into the extra period to give the Blue Devils their only lead of the day and a wild 12-11 win.
Bucknell 11, Ohio State 5: On Feb. 20, in the home opener at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, the roles were reversed this time, as the Bison got off to a slow start but finished strong in an 11-5 win over Ohio State. Bucknell fought off 2-0 and 4-2 deficits, then outscored the Buckeyes 9-1 over the final 37:08.
Bucknell 13, Towson 9: On Feb. 27 at Johnny Unitas Stadium, the Bison outscored Towson 6-0 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 13-9 victory. Tim Brandau, playing back in his hometown, was the story for Bucknell. Brandau finished with six goals and two assists, and he had four goals and one assist in the fourth quarter alone. The Bison trailed 9-7 after three periods, but Brandau scored three straight only 4:40 apart to put them up 10-9. Later, he assisted on one insurance goal and scored another to help his team avenge a loss to the Tigers last season.
Navy 8, Bucknell 7 (OT): After Bucknell rallied from a four-goal deficit with a huge fourth quarter, Patrick Moran scored 1:20 into overtime to lift Navy to an 8-7 win. Ryan Klipstein's third goal of the day tied the game at 7-7 with 1:25 left in regulation, then Jake Clarke won the faceoff and the Bison played for the final shot. Charlie Streep, who beat Navy at the buzzer in Lewisburg last season, shot wide inside five seconds remaining, but Austin Winter grabbed the loose ball behind the goal and made a great feed in front to middie Chris Palmer. Navy goalie RJ Wickham made a great spawling save, however, and the Mids scored on the first possession of overtime.
Bucknell 9, Hobart 7: In his first game as an attackman, Charlie Streep scored four goals and Austin Winter had a goal and three assists to lead the Bison to a home win over their former Patriot League rivals. The game was tied at 3-3 at the half, but the Bison took control with a four-goal third quarter.
Bucknell 17, Jacksonville 8: In the first-ever college lacrosse game played in Forsyth County, N.C., Bucknell sprinted to a 7-0 lead, withstood a second-quarter rally by Jacksonville, and eventually pulled away for a 17-8 win. Bucknell's starting attack unit of Charlie Streep (4-3-7), Austin Winter (4-2-6) and Mike Danylyshyn (1-2-3) combined for nine goals and seven assists.
Lafayette 16, Bucknell 15: The 11th-ranked and then-unbeaten (6-0) Leopards broke a 15-all tie on Stefan Bauer's goal with 2:13 left and defeated the Bison for the first time since 1993. The classic game featured five lead changes and was tied at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 12, 14 and 15. The loss overshadowed a record-setting day for midfielder Ryan Klipstein, who tied the Bucknell record with eight goals. Austin Winter assisted on five of Klipstein's eight tallies, and Winter finished with nine points on two goals and seven assists.
Albany 7, Bucknell 6: Bucknell connected on only six of 39 shots, including two misses in the final 12 seconds of the game. The Bison finished with advantages in shots (39-22), ground balls (39-20) and faceoffs (11-6), but John Carroll's 14 saves helped the Great Danes overcome Bucknell's statistical domination.
Bucknell 11, Penn State 9: Bumped out of the national rankings for the first time this season, Bucknell got its offense back in gear, scoring four times in the opening period and four more in succession in the fourth to break open a 7-all tie. Ryan Klipstein had three goals and an assist to lead the offense.
Bucknell 11, Holy Cross 2: Ryan Klipstein pumped in five more goals to lead the offense, and Kyle Feeney backstopped a terrific defensive effort with 12 saves as the Bison improved to 20-0 all-time against the Crusaders.
Army 7, Bucknell 6 (OT): Army stunned the Bison with a Garrett Thul goal with 0:05 left in regulation and then a man-down goal from Tyler Seymour in over time to rally for a 7-6 win. The Bison led 4-1 early and 5-3 in the fourth quarter. After Army knotted the game at 5-all, Charlie Streep's third goal of the night put the Bison up 6-5 with 1:16 to play. Bucknell won the faceoff and had the ball behind the Army goal with less than 30 seconds left, but a turnover led to the tying goal.
Bucknell 14, Lehigh 5: Bucknell turned in a dominant effort against the Mountain Hawks, parlaying an 8-2 halftime lead into a nine-goal win. Austin Winter produced four goals and three assists, and the Bison controlled possession behind a 14-for-22 faceoff performance. Lehigh was held to 17 total shots in the game.
Bucknell 8, Colgate 7 (OT): In a do-or-die game for the final Patriot League Tournament berth, Bucknell pulled it out 8-7 on Austin Winter's goal with 55 seconds left in the first overtime period. OT seemed like a far-fetched idea when the Bison led 7-1 with two minutes left in the third quarter, but Colgate stormed back to tie the game, and both goalies made big saves in the final minutes of regulation to preserve the tie.
More From the Colgate Game
Colgate scored on its first shot of the game to go up 1-0, then the Bison held the Raiders scoreless for 41 minutes while building the 7-1 lead ... Ryan Klipstein and Mike Danylyshyn scored two goals apiece and Chris Palmer had a goal and two assists to lead the offense ... goalie Kyle Feeney made 11 saves, including a big one with 1:14 left in regulation and another in overtime to keep it a 7-7 game ... Bucknell was called for only two penalties in the game, but both were three-minute illegal stick penalties ... they were the first two such penalties of the season for the Bison ... Austin Winter's overtime goal was the first of his career.
Bucknell vs. Army, Part 1
Army 7, Bucknell 6 (Apr. 10, 2010): The Bison felt like they let one get away when the two teams met at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium earlier this month. Bucknell had an early 4-1 lead, but Army came back to tie it at 5-5 on Garrett Thul's goal with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter. Charlie Streep put the Bison back in front with his third goal of the day with just 1:16 remaining, and Bucknell followed it up by winning the faceoff. It had the ball behind the Army goal with about 30 seconds left in the game, but a turnover gave the Black Knights a final shot, and they capitalized when Thul scored the equalizer with 0:05 left. Then in overtime Bucknell went up a man, but another turnover led to an Army fastbreak, and Tyler Seymour finished with a man-down goal with 1:31 left.
All-League Notes
Bucknell placed six players on the All-Patriot League Team, three on the first team and three on the second team. The six all-leaguers tied Army for league-high honors. Bison named to the first team were attackman Austin Winter, midfielder Ryan Klipstein and faceoff man Jake Clarke. The Bison second-teamers were Charlie Streep, who was voted as an attackman, and defensemen Jason Neithamer and Alex Lyons.
Winter became only the second player in league history to earn four First Team All-Patriot League citations. He joined Tim Pearson of Army, who collected four from 1999-2002.
Winter is the sixth player in league history to earn four all-league nods of any kind. In addition to Winter and Pearson, the other four-time all-conference players are Bucknell's Chris Cara (2002-05, 3x first team), Colgate's Brandon Corp (2006-09, 3x first team), Army's John Walker (2003-06, 1x first team) and Lafayette goalie Duncan Woodard (1998-01, 2x first team).
Clarke was named to the first team for the second straight year as the faceoff specialist.
Streep, a sophomore, earned all-league honors for the second year in a row, and at two different positions. He was the 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-Patriot League midfielder. This year he was a second-team pick at attack, where he made seven starts after the injury to Tim Brandau. Now that Brandau has returned, Streep is back at midfield.
Klipstein, Lyons and Neithamer all made the all-league team for the first time in their careers.
This is the second straight year that Bucknell has had six All-Patriot League selections. The team record is seven in 1996 and 2001.
Brandau Back
Senior attackman Tim Brandau returned to the Bison lineup on Apr. 16 against Lehigh. Brandau suffered ankle and knee injuries in the final seconds of regulation in Bucknell's overtime loss to Navy on March 6. After sitting out seven games, Brandau was in the starting lineup against Lehigh two games ago. He took four shots in the game, scoring twice and hitting two posts. Brandau scored another goal in the overtime win over Colgate and now has 14 goals and four assists in six games this season.
Clarke Breaks Bucknell Career Ground Ball Record, Ties Faceoff Mark
Junior Jake Clarke, who set a school record with 98 ground balls this season, has 71 more in 11 games this year. He ranks No. 1 in the league and No. 5 in the country in GBs per game, and against Lehigh he broke the Bucknell career record for ground balls.
In last week's win over Colgate, Clarke recorded his 300th career faceoff win, tying Ryan Goodman's program record.

Scoring Balance
This is the second straight year -- but only the fourth time in program history -- that Bucknell has produced four 20-goal scorers in the same season
Bucknell Seasons with Four 20-Goal Scorers 2010 Ryan Klipstein (32), Charlie Streep (22), Austin Winter (20), Mike Danylyshyn (20) 2009 Joe Mele (28), Charlie Streep (25), Perry Menzies (22), Tim Brandau (20) 1987 Tom Cusick (27), Frank Hamilton (24), Tom Walther (22), Peter Keblish (20) 1980 Matt Fraser (23), Rink Smith (23), Bob Mathai (22), John Morris (22), Tim Ainslie (22)
20-20 Vision
This season Austin Winter has recorded at least 20 goals and 20 assists for the second time in his career. It is the 14th 20-20 season in school history, and he is just the third Bucknell player to do it more than once. Chris Cara had three 20-20 seasons (2002, 2004, 2005), and Peter Von Hoffmann did it twice (1977, 1979).
Heartbreak Hotel
All five of Bucknell's losses this season have come by one goal. That is a new school record for one-goal losses in a season.
Dating back to last year, each of the team's last eight losses and nine of the last 11 have come by a single goal.
Three of Bucknell's five losses in 2010 have come in overtime against quality competition in Duke, Navy and Army.

Senior Speaking
Prior to the Colgate game, Bucknell honored its six seniors: co-captains Scott Monfort and Austin Winter, along with Ryan Bakker, Tim Brandau, Brandon Buchmayr and Chris Palmer.
This is now the winningest senior class in program history. The Class of 2010 has contributed to 38 wins, two more than last year's seniors.

Klipstein Scoring Goals in Bunches
Junior midfielder Ryan Klipstein is enjoying a career year. He has scored 32 goals in 13 games, more than double the 15 combined goals he tallied in 2008 and 2009.
Klipstein ranks 17th nationally in goals per game, but he is third among midfielders. Only Kevin Crowley of Stony Brook (2.92 goals per game) and Steve Serling of Lafayette (2.77) have scored more often among Division I middies.
Klipstein tied the Bucknell and Patriot League records with eight goals in a 16-15 loss to Lafayette on March 20. The only other Bison to net eight goals in a game was Jim Ball against Penn State in 1979.
Klipstein also had five goals against Holy Cross. His streak of five straight multi-goal games ended against Army.
Klipstein has 22 goals in his last seven games.
He is Bucknell's first 30-goal scorer since 2004, when Chris Cara and Patrick Christensen both recorded 38.
Klipstein now holds the Bucknell record for goals in a season by a midfielder. He is just the second Bison midfielder to score 30 goals in a season, joining Bucknell Hall of Famer Rodney Brown who scored 30 goals back in 1983.
Lyons a Takeaway Artist
Junior defenseman Alex Lyons has been one of the nation's top thieves in 2010. With 35 caused turnovers in 13 games, he ranks behind only Brian Karalunas of Villanova (3.46) and Michael Camardo of UMBC (2.91) among all Division I players in that category.
Winter Wonderland
Senior Austin Winter ranks high among Bucknell's all-time scorers. With his three assists against Towson earlier in the year, he became only the third player in program history to record 100 career assists.

Winter last season became the fifth two-time All-American in Bucknell lacrosse history, and this year he is aiming to become the program's first-ever three-time All-American.
On the Patriot League career leaderboard, Winter ranks fourth in assists and seventh in points.
Winter was named the 2010 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and an Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American.
Bison Are Patriot League's Stingiest on D, No. 4 in Nation in Forced Turnovers
After holding Holy Cross, Army, Lehigh and Colgate to 21 combined goals in the last four games, Bucknell has taken over the No. 1 spot in the Patriot League in scoring defense, with a team goals-against average of 7.77 (Navy is right behind at 8.34).
The Bison rank No. 6 nationally in scoring defense.
Bucknell is now fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (10.46), not far behind national leader Syracuse (11.0). Bucknell led the nation in this category one week ago.
At the X
Prior to last season, Bucknell's Achilles heel had come in the faceoff department. The Bison made significant strides in that area in 2009, when former walk-on Jake Clarke won the starting faceoff job in the preseason and proceeded to break school records for faceoff wins (187) and ground balls (98) in a season. He ranked fourth nationally in ground balls per game (6.53) and sixth in faceoff percentage (.578).
Clarke, who had a 20-for-21 game against Penn State last season, has won 59.5% of his faceoffs in 2010 and has 71 ground balls in 11 games.
Clarke is the league leader in both ground balls and faceoff percentage, and he is now Bucknell's career leader in GBs and faceoff wins.
In the Crease
Bucknell graduated two senior goalies following the 2009 season, Patriot League Goalie of the Year Nick Sciubba and Arnold, Md., native Matt Antonelli.
Junior Sam Finnell started the first two games of the season, but freshman Kyle Feeney came on and was excellent in relief in both games. He made four fourth-quarter saves against Duke and had nine saves with only two goals against in the win over Ohio State.
Feeney has since commandeered the starting job, and he has excelled in that role. He leads the Patriot League and ranks third nationally with a 7.31 goals-against average. His .577 save percentage ranks No. 2 in the league and No. 11 in the nation.
Feeney leads all Division I freshmen goalies in save percentage and GAA.
Feeney was named the Patriot League Goalie of the Week after making 12 saves with only two goals against in the 12-2 win over Holy Cross. He has also won a PL Rookie of the Week honor this year.
Feeney made a season-high 19 saves against Lafayette. That is tied for the ninth-highest total in the nation this season.
Frosh Goalies Rare at Bucknell
Kyle Feeney is just the sixth freshman in Bucknell history to play the majority of his team's minutes in goal. Here is how the others fared:
Bucknell Freshman Goalies Name Year GP/GS GAA SV% Kyle Feeney 2010 13/11 7.31 .577 Justin Sussman 2001 8/6 7.62 .605 Mark Stirpe 1995 13/13 9.94 .514 Colin Barker 1991 10/10 10.30 .581 Ken Mangano 1987 14 11.10 .569 Tom Sanders 1976 11 7.20 .607 Robert McLewee 1972 11 6.55 .629
Brandau Now Top 10 in Career Goals
Senior Tim Brandau topped the 100-point plateau earlier this season, and his six goals against Towson moved him into the top 10 on Bucknell's career list.
Bucknell Career Goal Leaders 1. Justin Zackey, 1991-94 138 2. Tom Cusick, 1984-87 117 3. Chris Cara, 2002-05 111 4. Joe Mele, 2006-09 103 5. Jim Ball, 1976-79 98 6. Jon Romm, 1987-90 97 7. Brandau seemed a good bet to become the fifth 100-goal scorer in program history before knee and ankle injuries cost him seven games this season. With his two goals against Lehigh in his return to the lineup last week, he moved into ninth on the career goals list.
Patriot League Success
Bucknell is 49-18 (.731) in the Patriot League since the start of the 2000 season, including a perfect 6-0 mark in 2009.
Prior to the advent of the Patriot League Tournament, Bucknell won or shared PL titles in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Bison won outright championships in 1996 and 2001.
In 1996, despite a 12-0 overall record, they were passed over for an NCAA Tournament bid, but in 2001 Bucknell received its very first NCAA invitation.
Head Coach Frank Fedorjaka
Reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year Frank Fedorjaka is in his fifth season as Bucknell's head coach after succeeding the legendary Sid Jamieson.
Fedorjaka, who is only the second head coach in the 43-year history of the program, has a 44-29 (.603) record at Bucknell and an 83-60 (.580) overall record, including a five-year stint at Franklin & Marshall.
He had been an assistant coach under Jamieson before taking over as head coach in 2006.
Frank's wife, Kathy Fedorjaka, is Bucknell's head women's basketball coach.
Next Up
With a victory on Friday, Bucknell would advance to the Patriot League championship game for the third straight year. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 3 p.m. at Michie Stadium and will be televised on CBS College Sports.
