BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Quinten Marcott won the shot put and set a program top-10 mark to lead a group of 14 Bison to claim gold as Bucknell men's track and field competed at the unscored Bloomsburg Invitational on Saturday. Marcott was a major player for the Bison as they swept all three throws events as well as a number of races on the track.
Marcott posted a mark of 51 feet, 0 ¼ inches in the shot, giving him the ninth-best distance in Bucknell history. He was joined by Zachary Shapiro, Jonathan Lockhart and Tom Barr, who finished second through fourth, respectively, in the shot put. Shapiro's throw of 50-10 was a season-best for the Bison.
Lockhart also won the hammer throw with a mark of 164-1. Leonard Joseph was second (162-1), while Marcott was third (138-8). All three distances were season-bests for the trio. That trend continued in the discus as Joseph took his turn in first place with a throw of 155-0. Lockhart was second, Barr was third with the best throw of his season (142-11) and Luke Webster was fourth.
The jumps proved to be more of the same for the Orange and Blue. Kyle Anthony was the top athlete in the long jump (22-6 ¼) and the triple jump (48-4 ¼). The senior's triple jump mark earned him his second IC4A-qualifying finish in as many meets. Drew Fitzgerald took second in the pole vault, narrowly defeating his younger teammate Ian Ferguson. Both Bison cleared 14-2 ¾, a mark that is a career-best for Ferguson.
On the track, Bucknell was the clear leader in the 800. The Bison took six of the first seven places in the event with Clayton Smith earning first with a time of 1 minute, 55.91 seconds. Dustin Horning (1:56.10) and Kyle Ramer (1:56.63) ran season-best times while finishing second and third, respectively.
The 4x100 relay joined the list of IC4A qualifiers, finishing with a time of 42.01 seconds. The strong finish came despite being the only team entered in the event. The relay consisted of Andrew Yehl, Justin Hicks, Thomas McGarrigle and Isaih Bell.
Bucknell continued to show that it is peaking at the right time as Guy Castranova recorded a season-best time in the 400 meters (50.33), and Matthew Brooker did the same in the 5000 meters (14:56.91).
Brooker's top time earned him first place in the 5000. Also finishing ahead of the pack were Dan Mularz in the 400 hurdles, Justin Hicks in the 200, Nicholas Blodis in the 1500 and Baron Willeford in the 3000. The 4x400 relay team of Darren Harris, Castranova, Evan Novakowski and Dan Mularz also won.
"I was very pleased with the results," head coach Kevin Donner said. "We had a lot of different goals and expectations depending on the individual as we are focusing on next weekend's league championships. The weather played havoc with it being very windy again. The headwind in the 100,100 hurdles and 200 didn't help our times, but I still like how our athletes competed."
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend when it begins its championship season. The Bison will host the Patriot League Championships at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium April 30-May 1.
