LEWISBURG, Pa. - Andrew Brouse extended his own Bucknell career home run record and B.J. LaRosa had a three-run double as the Bison baseball team posted an 11-4 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday afternoon at a breezy Depew Field. The game was delayed, and eventually called, due to lightning in the bottom of the seventh inning with Brouse at bat and the bases loaded with none out.
Bucknell (18-25), which won for the fourth time in its last five home games, scored at least one run in five straight innings and totaled 12 hits in the contest. Maryland Eastern Shore (2-33) plated three runs in the fourth inning and recorded eight hits overall, including solo home runs by Tre-von Johnson and Bryan Chaikowsky.
The wind was blowing out at Depew Field as the teams combined for three home runs and six extra-base hits. Brouse, who narrowly missed a second home run when he flew out to deep center field to end the fourth inning, gave Bucknell a 5-0 lead when he led off the third inning with his career-high 13th home run of the year. The deep home run was the 26th of Brouse's career, extending his own record he set with a home run at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. Brouse is now just one home run shy of the single-season mark of 14 held by Frank Fresconi.
Starting pitcher Marcus Garone (2-0) set the tone early for the Bison as he pitched a scoreless three innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out four. Relievers Matt Foley, Michael Dallanegra and Alex Cillo followed. Foley yielded three runs in his inning of work, while Cillo recorded four strikeouts in his two innings. He now has 23 strikeouts in just 17.1 innings of work this year. Overall, the four Bucknell pitchers combined for nine strikeouts in seven innings.
The Bison went on top early with four runs in the bottom of the second. Scott Glass, who started at second base, knocked in the first run with a two-out single that scooted under the glove of shortstop J.J. Corriveau. Ben Allen, who extended reached base five times and extended his hitting streak to nine games, loaded the bases with a bunt single and LaRosa followed with a hard-hit double down the line in right field that scored three runs.
Ben Yoder and David Duffett both posted RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings as Bucknell led 7-4 through five innings of play.
Bucknell scored for the fifth straight inning when it batted around in the sixth and four runs came across the plate. One run scored on a wild pitch with Brouse at bat and the bases loaded, while Doug Shribman singled home two runs. Bob Donato, who had his team-high 15th double of the year in the fifth inning, rounded out the Bison scoring with a sac fly that plated Brouse.
Maryland Eastern Shore used six pitchers in the game, including three that did not record an out. The Hawks final pitcher entered the game just before the delay occurred. Maryland Eastern Shore pitchers walked a total of nine hitters, including three by starter Matt Witte (1-5).
All nine Bucknell starters recorded at least one hit in the game, led by two hits apiece from Allen, Shribman and Duffett. Allen scored three runs from his leadoff position, giving him 142 in his four-year career, a figure that ranks second in program history.
Bucknell will be back in action at home this weekend when it hosts Lehigh in a four-game series at Depew Field. First pitch both days is noon. The Bison and Mountain Hawks enter the weekend tied for third in the Patriot League standings with matching 6-6 conference marks.
