Bucknell Women's Tennis Wins Season Finale, 6-0 Over Bloomsburg

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis finished its 2009-10 season with a 6-0 win over Bloomsburg in a match shortened due to lightning on Senior Day. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) closed out her career in the Orange and Blue with her record 19th straight singles win, leading the Bison to a singles sweep and a 14-7 season record.
Varela defeated Katie Hasyn 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. The victory gives the Bison senior a career record of 75-25, which ranks her fourth all-time at Bucknell. It also brings her combined record to 148-55, tying her for third on the all-time victories list.
Fellow senior Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) won her match at fourth singles, defeating Alison Carney 6-1, 6-0.
Also collecting victories were Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School), Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). Lucido extended her singles winning streak to 14 matches with her 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 over Laura Sullivan. Iepuras did not allow a game to Emily Palko, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Dwojewski defeated Kristen Bonito 6-0, 6-3 and Rottkamp won 6-1, 6-0 over Andrea Malatesta.
No doubles matches were completed because of the weather. Varela and Lucido as well as Iepuras and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) were tied 3-3 in their matches. Dwojewski and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) were trailing Malatesta and Sullivan 4-2 at third doubles.
