LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field claimed a pair of weekly awards from the Patriot League on Tuesday. Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) was named the league's Female Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight voting period while Daniel Markwalter (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T) earned his first career Male Rookie of the Week nod.
Musante, who was named the Patriot League's top field athlete for the fifth time this year, scored in all three events in which she was entered at the Bucknell Team Challenge last weekend. The senior won the hammer throw with a mark of 170 feet, 7 inches. She went on to finish second in the shot put (45-4 ¼) and fifth in the discus (132-6) later in the day. Her performances in the hammer and shot put solidified her spot in the ECAC Championships in May.
Musante is no stranger to top marks at Bucknell. She became the first Bison woman to score in two individual events at last year's ECAC Indoor Championships, placing in the weight throw and shot put. Since then, she has set the school record in the indoor shot put (47-10 ¾), ranks second all-time in the weight throw (59-7) and outdoor shot put (45-11 ¼), and is third in program history in the hammer throw (173-5).
Markwalter is just beginning his career in the Orange and Blue and has claimed his first career weekly award after clearing a career-best 15-1 in the pole vault at the Bucknell Team Challenge. His performance earned him sixth place at the home meet, giving him his fourth top-10 finish in as many meets. Markwalter's placement in the event turned out to be a key to Bucknell's team victory as the Bison won the five-team meet by just .33 points over second-place Penn State.
Musante will be one of several Bison to compete at the Penn Relays April 22-24. The thrower will participate in the shot put and hammer in Philadelphia. Markwalter and the rest of the Bison will stay closer to home, competing at the Bloomsburg Invitational on April 24.
