ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell men's golf team posted the low score of the day in Sunday's final round of the Navy Spring Invitational and finished second out of 21 teams. Buoyed by final-round 72s from Andrew Cohen and Dan Bernard and a 73 from Will Bachman, the Bison shot 292 but came up four shots behind host Navy, which entered the day 18 strokes ahead of Bucknell.
It was an excellent weekend for Bachman, who picked a good time to put up a T-5th finish with Bison head coach Jim Cotner working on finalizing his six-man lineup for next week's Patriot League Championship. Bachman posted rounds of 74-73 (+5) and became the sixth different Bucknell player to finish in the top five at a tournament in 2009-10.
Cohen, coming off a win at the Lafayette Invitational last week, shot 76-72 and finished in ninth place. Bernard's spring-low 72 followed an opening-round 78, and he finished 13th at 150. Andrew Wallisch (76-75) tied for 14th and Ben Mattingly (78-76) finished T-32nd.
Looking back, Navy won the tournament on day one with a 286. The Midshipmen followed with a 306, and Bucknell almost made up all of its 18-shot deficit. The Bison did leapfrog Columbia for second place. The Lions ended up third at 602, 10 shots behind Navy and six back of Bucknell. Lafayette finished fourth at 603 and Saint Francis (Pa.) was fifth at 605.
Among other Patriot League competition in the field, Lehigh placed ninth with a 623 and Colgate was 17th at 643.
The individual title went to Ben Hayes of Navy, who closed with a 75 after posting a 4-under 67 on Saturday. Hayes finished even par for the weekend, one better than Clark Granum of Columbia and four ahead of Navy's Michael Harrington and Lafayette's Josh Edelson.
Bucknell will send a contingent to the St. Peter's Invtiational on Tuesday, then the Patriot League Championship gets underway Saturday at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Club.
