LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's track and field earned its second team victory of the season by the slimmest of margins at the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Bison finished with 194.66 points, just ahead of second-place Penn State's 194.33 points. Bucknell claimed six individual victories on its way to the team title.
The real difference maker proved to be the 110 meter hurdles. Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) took 1-2 in the event, but the fight came for fifth place. Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) and Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) tied with the Nittany Lions' Jonathan Kowal, as all three crossed the line in 15.33 seconds. Each runner earned .33 points for the finish.
Arent claimed first in the 400 hurdles. He scored in his second event with a time of 54.17 seconds. Close behind was Mularz in third at 55.71.
The sprints served as a strong point for the Bison on their home track on Senior Day. Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) won the 100 meters (10.62) and took second in the 200 (21.90). Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) and Thomas McGarrigle (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) also scored in the 100.
In the field events, Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) competed in his first meet of the season and made quite an impact with wins in both the long jump and triple jump. The senior's mark of 47 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump qualified him for the IC4A Championships. He also posted a mark of 22-5 ¾ in the long jump.
Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) claimed the top two spots in the javelin. Pierce's throw of 194-1 and Heitzman's mark of 192-10 ensured their fourth consecutive meet with an IC4A-qualifying performance.
The Bison claimed a handful of top-three finishes at the longer distances. Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) placed second in the 1500 with a time of 3:55.84. Nicholas Blodis (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickly Academy) was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:36.6), and D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) was third in the 3000 meters (8:52.97).
"I thought both the men and women's teams competed very hard today," said head coach Kevin Donner. "I was very proud of how they handled the adverse weather. It was very cold and windy. Winning the meet on the men's side over Penn State is a great morale booster as we head into the last few weeks. In days like today you cannot worry about times and distances, but it is always important to compete hard and try to beat people."
Rounding out the team scoring was Duquesne in third place with 83 points. The Dukes were followed by Lock Haven (71.75) and Binghamton (69).
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend at a pair of meets. The Bison will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., April 22-24 for the Penn Relays as well as compete at the Bloomsburg Invitational on April 24.
