NEW YORK, N.Y. - Columbia overcame a pair of four-error games and posted two walk-off wins against the Bucknell baseball team Sunday afternoon at Robertson Field. The Lions won both games by a 6-5 margin, claiming the seven-inning game one in extra innings and pushing a total of four runs across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings of game two. Bucknell (10-14) lost all four games this weekend and has now lost six in a row overall.
Bucknell received solid pitching performances in both games, but the offense managed just 14 hits in the twinbill. Just three of the 10 runs the Bison scored on the day were earned as Bucknell did capitalize on a number of Columbia's (7-11) miscues.
After trailing most of game one by a 5-1 margin, Bucknell scored a single run in the sixth on a Doug Shribman double and then three more to tie the game in the seventh. All four of Columbia's errors in the game occurred during the seventh inning and the Bison batted around. A two-run single by Shribman knotted the score at 5-5.
Alex Cillo and Michael Dallanegra retired the Lions with just a single in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
Bob Donato drew a one-out walk, but was later picked off, as the Bison sent the minimum three hitters to the plate in the top of the eighth.
Alexander Aurrichio reached base leading off the bottom of the eighth for Columbia on an error at second base by freshman Robb Scott, who was filling in for Ben Yoder. Aurrichio, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored the winning run two batters later when Alex Ferrara singled to left.
Reliever Derek Squires (1-0) picked up the win for the Lions. The Bison registered just one hit and one walk against the Columbia bullpen.
Steve Carlin made his first career start for Bucknell and was effective, lasting 4.0 innings, giving up five hits and five runs while striking out three and walking two. Four Bison relievers combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings and limited Columbia to just two hits, two walks and the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Dallanegra, who leads the team with a 0.84 ERA, gave up the winning hit to Ferrara and suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.
In game two, Bucknell again fell behind early thanks to a two-run home run by Dean Forthun in the third inning. However, the Bison scored a run in the fourth thanks to a wild pitch and four more in the sixth as two Columbia errors helped out. A two-out, two-run double by Ben Allen was the big blow in the inning.
Jack Boehm started for Bucknell and went 8.0 innings, scattering 11 hits. He yielded four runs, all coming on home runs as Nick Ferraresi connected on a one-out, two-run shot in the eighth to make the score 5-4.
Boehm left the game in favor of Matt Lamore (2-1) in the ninth and Lamore walked three of the four hitters he faced. Russell Seidell replaced him and walked the first batter he faced, forcing in the tying run. Aurrichio followed with a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score the winning run for the Lions.
Andrew Brouse, who was one of four Bison to have a hit in both ends of the doubleheader, was 2-for-4 in the game.
Eric Williams (1-0) pitched the final three innings for Columbia and did not allow a hit. In fact, he retired the first six Bison he faced before walking a pair in the top of the ninth.
Bucknell, which has been swept in three consecutive doubleheaders by Le Moyne and Columbia, will open Patriot League play next weekend at Lafayette. Doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday will begin at noon.
