12 Bucknell Men's Water Polo Players Earn Spots on CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Twelve Bucknell men's water polo players were named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar-Athlete Team last week. As a team, the Bison posted a grade-point average of 3.33 during the fall semester, ranking fourth among all varsity programs, behind only Brown, Harvard and MIT.
Student-athletes were recognized in three levels: 3.20 to 3.40 GPA (Excellent), 3.41 to 3.70 GPA (Superior) and 3.71 to 4.0 (Outstanding). Bucknell had three players recognized in the Outstanding category, five in the Superior list and four more land in the Excellent group.
Junior Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), senior Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) and freshman Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) were listed in the Outstanding category, while seniors Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute), along with junior Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and sophomores Spencer Richley (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Daniel Schwartz (Miami Beach, Fla./Ransom Everglades) were part of the Superior list. Juniors Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and sophomore Sam Fiske (La Jolla, Calif./The Bishop's School) and freshman Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) were part of the Excellent group.
Overall, 107 varsity student-athletes were recognized by the CWPA with 23 Outstanding, 51 Superior and 33 Excellent honorees. Bucknell's 12 total student-athletes on the list eclipsed its 2008 total of eight honorees.
Bucknell finished the 2009 campaign with a 17-14 record and finished in third place at the Eastern Championship, its best showing at the event since a runner-up finish in 1993. It was the fourth consecutive time the Bison have posted a final record above .500.
