LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's lacrosse's Alex Lyons (Owings Mills, Md./Boys' Latin) was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Bison to a 9-7 victory over Hobart last weekend. The junior forced the Statesmen into five turnovers to lead Bucknell defensively.
Lyons' five caused turnovers helped Bucknell to 15 as a team, setting a season high for the Orange and Blue. The defenseman now has a team-leading 14 caused turnovers on the season. Lyons, who has earned a starting assignment in all five of the Bison's games this year, also recorded four groundballs against Hobart, bringing his season total to 16.
Bucknell's defensive unit held Hobart to 0-for-2 on man-up opportunities on Saturday. Bison opponents have converted just 26.7 percent (4-for-15) of their extra-man opportunities for the season.
It is the first career weekly award for Lyons, but he is the second Bison to be named the league's top defender this season. Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) opened the year with the award on Feb. 23 following the Bison's first two games, a 12-11 overtime loss to then-No. 2 Duke and an 11-5 win over Ohio State.
Bucknell is 3-2 through the first portion of its season and ranks No. 16 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and No. 20 in the USILA Coaches' Poll. The Bison will next face Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The neutral-site game will take place at Forsyth Country Day School in Winston-Salem, N.C.
