LAKELAND, Fla. - Andrew Brouse was 3-for-3, hit a three-run home run and drove four runs in and Ben Yoder smashed a grand slam and drove in five runs leading the Bucknell baseball team to a 19-5 win over North Dakota State Monday at a windy Henley Field. Bison starter Dylan Seeley also had a strong outing as he allowed just one run and four hits in 6.0 innings of work despite the wind blowing out most of the game.
Seeley (2-2) retired the first 10 hitters and faced only one over the minimum through five innings. He finished with three strikeouts and did not walk a hitter.
Despite Seeley's strong start, it was not needed as 12 of the Bison's season-high 19 runs came in the first three innings. In fact, all nine of Bucknell's (7-6) starters had at least one hit by the third inning.
Yoder followed a leadoff triple by Ben Allen with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, putting the Bison up 1-0 early.
Bucknell then batted around in both the second and third innings, scoring six in the second and five more in the third. In the second, B.J. LaRosa, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and Brouse followed with a three-run home run. It was his third of the season and the 16th of his career, moving him into a tie for 10th place on the program's all-time list.
Yoder's grand slam came in the third inning and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Doug Shribman also drove in a run with a single in the inning, extending his hitting streak to 12 games as well.
The Bison tacked on two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Brouse and an RBI single by Drew Constable. It was the third hit of the game for Brouse, who came a triple shy of the cycle.
For the second straight game Bucknell head coach Gene Depew substituted liberally in the later innings with a big lead. Despite that, the Bison scored four more runs in seventh. Starter Bob Donato had an RBI double, while freshman reserves Robb Scott and Travis Clark both registered RBI singles.
North Dakota State used just three pitchers since it is scheduled to play a second game later in the day on Monday. John Togneri (0-1) got the loss after giving up seven runs and five hits in 1.2 innings.
Bucknell, which has outscored its last two opponents - UMBC and North Dakota State - 37-11, will continue its Spring Break trip Tuesday at 11 a.m. against Yale.
