LEWISBURG, Pa. - Backed by three goals and two assists from Kelly Draper, Lehigh controlled the first Patriot League women's lacrosse game of the season and defeated Bucknell 13-2 Friday night in a steady rain at Graham Field. Lauren Dykstra and Megan Kelly also scored three times to keep the Mountain Hawks perfect on the season at 5-0, while the Bison dropped their fifth in a row and fell to 1-6.
Ryan Gribbon (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored the Bucknell goals, while freshman Madison Hurwitz (Southampton, Pa./Council Rock South) registered an assist for her first career point.
Bucknell's already depleted lineup took another hit when middie Ryan Wenk (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), this week's Patriot League Rookie of the Week, was unable to go due to injury.
Lehigh wasted no time gaining control, taking the lead on Kelly's goal just 53 seconds into the contest. That was the first of eight straight goals by the Mountain Hawks to start the game. All of them were unassisted tallies, three coming on free-position shots. Draper scored three times and Kelly and Dykstra twice in the run. Kindall Healy made it 8-0 on a free-position attempt with 7:25 left in the half.
Bucknell got on the board with 6:54 left in the opening period when Gribbon beat a defender coming in from the left wing and snuck a shot past goalie MaryLeahDiNisco. Dykstra's goal off an Allison Thomas assist gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-1 lead at the half.
Lehigh scored two goals in 12 seconds to go up 11-1, then Hurwitz fed Devine behind the cage, and the Bison junior stuffed one in for her seventh goal of the season.
Thomas and Leigh Ann Torcivia tacked on two more for Lehigh to make it 13-2, and there was no scoring in the final 14:30.
Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) finished with eight saves for the Bison, while DiNisco had four saves for Lehigh before coming out of the game with 10:40 to play.
Lehigh dominated the time of possession thanks to an 11-6 lead in draw controls and 18 Bucknell turnovers. The Mountain hawks had a 27-11 shot advantage, 20-6 in the first half.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday, hosting Duquesne at 3 p.m. at Graham Field.
