WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) scored three goals apiece and Bucknell outscored George Washington 5-1 in the second half as the Bison women's water polo team defeated the Colonials, 11-8, Thursday at Smith Center Pool. The game was the conference opener for both teams.
Bucknell (6-5, 1-0 CWPA So. Division) trailed 7-6 at halftime, but had a monster second half, yielding just one goal to George Washington (2-6, 0-1 CWPA So. Division) in the final 16 minutes of play. The Bison, who outscored the Colonials 4-0 in the third quarter, also overcame eight ejections to win by their largest margin since defeating Mercyhurst by nine in the season's second game.
Kennan, who scored a goal at the buzzer of the second quarter to cut Bucknell's halftime deficit to 7-6, now has a team-high 26 goals on the season. Canonica upped her season total to 20. Both high scorers also dished out an assist for a team-high four points apiece.
Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) registered her seventh double-figure save performance of the season as she tallied 13 saves in goal for the Bison. The senior is now averaging better than 11.5 saves per game.
While Carter was strong in goal, the Bucknell defense did record 12 steals, including three apiece by Carter and Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho). Rozas, the CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week, also scored two goals and registered an assist. She is now 13 points shy of becoming the third player in program history to reach the 300 plateau.
George Washington, which has lost four of its last five games, was led on the offensive end by sophomore Allison Peotter, who matched Canonica and Kennan with three goals.
Bucknell will commence its Spring Break trip to California on Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino and UC Santa Barbara. The Bison will play five games during their trip to California.
