LEWISBURG, Pa. - Wednesday's Bucknell-Holy Cross Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game has been selected for broadcast on CBS College Sports, the league office announced Sunday. And in an added twist, joining play-by-play announcer Bob Socci as the color analyst will be former Siena and Saint Joseph's head coach John Griffin Sr., the father of former Bison all-conference guard John Griffin.
Wednesday's game will still tip off at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion. Tickets are still available, and sales resume on Monday at 11 a.m. at either Campus Box Office location in the Weis Center or Elaine Langone Center, or over the phone at 570-577-1000. Tickets may also be purchased online at http://www.bucknell.edu/Boxoffice.xml.
Bucknell and Holy Cross have developed one of the most intense postseason rivalries in league history. This will be the 20th Patriot League Tournament, and on Wednesday the Bison and Crusaders will meet for the 13th time in the postseason and for the eighth time in the last nine years. Overall, it will be the 53rd meeting between the two teams in 20 years.
Among those 13 playoff clashes are four meetings in Patriot League championship games. Bucknell defeated Holy Cross in the final in 2005 and 2006, while the Crusaders topped the Bison in the title game in 1993 and 2007.
The two teams also faced off in the first round a year ago, when No. 2 Holy Cross topped No. 7 Bucknell 75-56 at the Hart Center. This year, the seeds are reversed. Bucknell secured the No. 2 seed on Sunday with a 62-51 victory at Army, the team's eighth win in its final 10 games of the season. The Bison finished 9-5 in league play, while the Crusaders went 5-9.
During the regular season, Bucknell and Holy Cross both defended their home court in head-to-head play. The Crusaders used a big second-half run to pull away 82-69 in Worcester on Jan. 16. In the rematch on Valentine's Day, the Bison prevailed 68-63 in a game also televised on CBS College Sports. Bucknell built a 20-point second-half lead in that one, but Holy Cross staged a furious late rally before running out of time.
Bucknell is 9-1 all-time in Patriot League Tournament games played on its home floor. The only loss came against Holy Cross in the 1993 championship game in Davis Gym.
