LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's track and field's Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazelton) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. The senior posted three top-four finishes, including a pair of titles, and was named the league's Field Athlete of the Meet at the Patriot League Championships last weekend.
Mantush earned the first gold medal of the championships when she won the pentathlon on Friday. Competing in the multi event for the first time this season, Mantush posted 4,449 points. That total improved her career best and ranks her third all-time at Bucknell.
The winning continued on Saturday when Mantush collected a first-place finish in the high jump. The jumper cleared 5 feet, 8 inches, tying her own school record. Mantush completed her outstanding weekend with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump on Sunday. With a season-best mark of 36-9 3/4, Mantush became one of four Bison to score in the event.
After claiming two of Bucknell's seven individual titles, Mantush was awarded her second career Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet honor. The Drums, Pa., native was also voted the league's top field athlete at the 2009 Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Mantush's success played a major role in the team's ability to earn its eighth team title in nine years. Bucknell won handily over defending champions Navy, collecting 168 points against the Midshipmen's 96. It was also the Bison's 13th Patriot League Indoor Track & Field title in program history. No other Patriot League school has won more than four team titles.
The Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week award is the first of Mantush's career. She is the second student-athlete from the women's track and field team to claim the honor, after Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) was voted the top Bucknell athlete on Jan.11.
Mantush and the rest of the Bison qualifiers will return to the track March 6-7 for the ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass.
