LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team swept the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division weekly awards, it was announced by the league office. Junior Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was named the CWPA Co-Player of the Week, while senior Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades and freshman Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) was cited as the Rookie of the Week. The trio helped the Bison to a 3-1 mark at this past weekend's season-opening Bison Invitational.
Canonica shared the Player of the Week award with Maryland's Shannon Simerly, who scored six goals and helped the Terrapins to a 2-1 record at the Bison Invitational.
A left-hander, Canonica registered eight goals, seven assists, nine ejections drawn and four steals in the four games over the weekend. Her 15 points paced the team, while she tied Valentina Rozas for the top spot on the squad in ejections drawn. Canonica's highest scoring output of the weekend came Friday night against Gannon when she registered four goals and one assist. She followed that performance with another five-point (3g, 2a) outing Saturday against Mercyhurst.
With her seven assists on the weekend, Canonica moved into sole possession of third place on Bucknell's career assists list. She now has 132 assists in 75 career games, putting her just 10 helpers behind Adrienne Schober's eight-year-old standard of 142. Canonica, who has 118 goals in her career, also moved into seventh place on the career points list, passing Cody Keffer.
Carter had a solid weekend as well, registering three double-figure save outings. She came one shy of her career high for saves twice with 13 stops against both Gannon and Wagner. Overall, Carter accumulated 42 saves and yielded just 27 goals in more than 110 minutes of play.
Thanks to her 42 stops, Carter moved past the 500-save plateau for her career and now has 502. She continues to rank third in program history behind only Mandy Bynum (963) and Lindsay Chesterfield (892).
Morgan was one of four Bison rookies who saw significant playing time in their first weekend of college competition. She led all freshmen with six points on five goals and an assist. She had a pair of goals off the bench against both Gannon and Mercyhurst and finished the weekend with five ejections drawn, four steals and one field block.
Bucknell defeated Gannon (19-4), Mercyhurst (14-5) and Wagner (8-7) this weekend to open the season 3-0. The Bison then dropped a 13-7 decision to No. 19 Indiana to conclude the Bison Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell will be idle this coming weekend and will return to action Feb. 27-28 at the ECAC Championship at Princeton. The Bison will face league rival Maryland in their first contest at the event.
