LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell junior point guard Darryl Shazier (Newport News, Va./Menchville) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday, a day after he scored a career-high 27 points in a big Patriot League victory over Holy Cross at Sojka Pavilion.
The Bison have won five of their last six to move within a game of first place in the league race, and Shazier has been a major reason why. In the 68-63 win over the Crusaders on Sunday, he scored 20 of his 27 points in the first half to send Bucknell on its way. When Holy Cross made a late run to cut into what had been a 20-point deficit, Shazier made three free throws in the final 35 seconds to help seal the win for Bucknell.
Shazier made his first six shots of the day, including four from 3-point range. He finished 9-for-13 from the field, 4-for-7 from the arc and 5-for-7 from the foul line. He also had three steals while holding American point guard Andrew Beinert to one field goal and seven points.
Shazier's previous career high was 24 points against Delaware earlier this season.
Earlier in the week the Bison took down American 73-59 in Washington, D.C. Shazier was held to seven points in that one, but his two field goals were big ones. Bucknell came out of the halftime break with a three-point lead, but Shazier hit 3-pointers on the first two possessions of the second half to stretch the margin to nine.
Shazier also had six assists and two steals without a turnover in 34 minutes as the Bison swept the season series from the Eagles.
Shazier leads Bucknell in scoring at 10.4 points per game. He leads the Patriot League in minutes played (35.2) and ranks second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5).
The Bison continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday against Lafayette at 7 p.m.
