Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls 6-1 Against Pitt

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis dropped its spring home opener, 6-1 to Pitt at the West Branch Tennis Club on Saturday. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) earned the Bison's lone point at No. 2 singles as Bucknell fell to 0-2 in dual matches.
Lucido's singles win came in easy fashion. After having to retire in her last match at Penn State, Lucido defeated the Panthers' Adela Aprodu, 6-1, 6-0.
Although Lucido claimed Bucknell's lone point, she was not the only Bison to win a match. Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) teamed up for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles over Aprodu and Karma Parbhu.
Bucknell dropped its other two doubles matches to lose the point. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lucido made it a tight competition, however, pushing their No. 1 doubles match against Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic to a tiebreaker before falling 9-8.
In other singles action, Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) played a tiebreaker of her own. The junior lost the first set 6-3 but rallied for a 7-5 win in the second against Sabrina Visram. Visrams got the better of her Bucknell opponent in the super tiebreaker, 10-3.
Bucknell will continue its home stand on Saturday, Feb. 20 when it hosts Duquesne at the West Branch Tennis Club in Williamsport.
