LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman guard Cameron Ayers (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) earned his first Anaconda Patriot League Rookie of the Week award on Monday after three strong performances in Bucknell's 2-1 week. Ayers averaged 9.7 points in those three games and played key roles down the stretch in consecutive victories over Columbia and Boston University.
After opening last week with a nine-point performance in a 77-73 loss to Wagner, Ayers came back two nights later to post a career-high 14 points in a 73-68 win over Columbia. In that game he scored 10 points in a close second half, including a 5-for-6 showing at the free-throw line in the waning minutes.
On Saturday night, Ayers scored all six of his points in the second half of another tightly contested game against Boston University. His first two shots reduced three-point deficits down to one, and then with just 4:53 left in the game he hit a jumper that gave Bucknell its first lead of the second half. The Bison went on to win a defensive struggle, 52-49, against the preseason favorite in the America East.
Ayers played a total of 70 minutes in the backcourt in the three games last week and did not commit a single turnover.
For the season, Ayers is averaging 7.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists while playing 24.0 minutes per game off the bench.
The Bison now stand at 4-6 on the season and have begun a 13-day break for final exams. The schedule resumes Dec. 17 at La Salle.
