LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo program recently announced its team awards and seven squad members earned honors. Senior co-captain Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) was awarded the team's highest honor, the Scott Schulte Award, which is presented annually to "the individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo."
Also recognized were Offensive MVP Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), Defensive MVPs Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick), Most Improved honoree Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School), Rookie of the Year Mike Kimble (Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes) and Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), who garnered the Coach's Award.
The Scott Schulte Award was established to honor the two-time water polo All-American, making it appropriate that Hyden, a two-time Honorable Mention All-American, was the recipient. A First Team CWPA All-Southern Division selection this fall, Hyden tied for first on the team with 52 goals and led the squad with 37 assists, 89 points and 57 ejections drawn. He finished his career seventh at Bucknell in goals (232), fifth in assists (161) and sixth in points (393). Hyden was the first Bison since Kevin Permisohn in 2000 to join any of those top-10 lists.
A three-time all-conference selection, Hyden posted 16 multi-goal games and 24 multi-point outings in 2010.
With nine ejections drawn in three games at the season-ending Eastern Championship, Hyden broke the program record for ejections drawn with 186 in his four-year career. He edged out previous record-holder Gabriel Heiber by four. A durable player, Hyden finished second on the school's all-time games started list (112) and ninth in games played (118).
Fellow senior Kalter earned Offensive MVP honors after tying Hyden for the team lead with 52 goals. It marked the second straight year Kalter led the squad in goals. The left-hander added 25 assists and 77 points, ranking him second on the team in both categories.
Kalter finished his time in Orange and Blue with 154 goals, 84 assists and 238 points. Nearly 70 percent (159) of the points were registered over the last two years.
Like Hyden, Kalter was a First Team CWPA All-Southern Division selection this year, and he also earned a spot on the All-Eastern Championship team after scoring five goals, dishing out three assists, registering three steals and recording five field blocks in three games.
Coghlan, another senior all-conference honoree, was the Coach's Award recipient for the second straight year after totaling 20 goals, dishing out 13 assists and finishing second on the team with 46 ejections drawn. The Chicago, Ill., native ended the season on a roll offensively, netting 12 goals over the final nine games. He had also drawn 27 ejections in the nine games entering the Eastern Championship.
Coghlan finished his career with 85 goals, 65 assists and 150 points, ranking third among all current Bison in each category. His 157 career ejections drawn place him third on that list, behind only Hyden and Heiber.
Goalies Gilhuly and Napleton shared the Defensive MVP award. Gilhuly, a senior, and Napleton, a sophomore, split time in goal throughout the season. Gilhuly finished with 139 saves and a .447 save percentage in 28 games and 606 minutes. Napleton concluded the campaign with 77 saves and a .481 save percentage in 20 contests and 328 minutes.
Gilhuly, who drew 24 starts, finished his career with 371 saves. His 139 stops in 2010 were a career high. Gilhuly (34) and Napleton (19) totaled 53 steals.
Caillouette, a junior, had totaled 19 goals and 24 assists his first two seasons, but had a breakout year this fall with 33 goals and 13 assists while starting 22 of 29 contests. He was third on the team in goals and fourth in points and ejections drawn (26).
Caillouette, who totaled nine multi-goal outings, equaled or exceeded his career highs for goals, assists, points, steals, shots, ejections drawn and games started.
Kimble was one of four freshmen on the roster who played in at least 27 games. He finished his rookie campaign with 11 goals, six assists, 12 ejections drawn, seven steals and five field blocks. Kimble appeared in 27 contests and earned four starts.
Bucknell finished the 2010 season with a 13-16 record. The Bison advanced to the Southern Championships title game for the first time since 1998 and finished fourth at the Eastern Championship. Bucknell faced 13 nationally ranked opponents.
