LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior men's water polo player Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. He scored nine goals and dished out two assists as he helped Bucknell to a second-place finish at this past weekend's Southern Championships.
Kalter finished the three-game weekend with two steals, one field block and one ejection drawn to go along with his nine goals and two assists. His best outing came in Saturday evening's semifinal matchup with No. 15 Navy when he netted a season-high five goals. He also recorded a pair of steals and registered a field block against the Mids.
One of only two Bison to net at least one goal in all three games over the weekend, Kalter tallied three goals in a must-win 11-7 opening-round victory over Mercyhurst. The Bison needed that win to guarantee a top-four finish at the tournament and a berth in next week's Eastern Championship.
With his nine goals, Kalter took over the team lead in goals this season as he now has 47, one more than classmate Richie Hyden. Kalter ranks second to Hyden in assists (22) and points (69).
Bucknell (12-14) concluded the weekend with a loss to No. 17 Princeton in the title game of the Southern Championships. Despite the loss, the Bison's second-place showing equaled their best-ever at the event.
Kalter and his teammates, who have faced a ranked opponent five times in their last six outings, will begin play at next week's Eastern Championship on Friday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. against Fordham. Bucknell is the host team for the three-day event which decides an automatic NCAA berth.
