LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell cross country placed a trio of student-athletes on the new Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Friday. Jake Schroeder (York, Pa./York Suburban) represented the Bison men's team, while Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) and Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) were selected from the women's side.
Schroeder earned his spot among the league's top student-athletes by posting a 3.70 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in both German and economics. A five-time member of the Bucknell Dean's List as well as a four-year Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection, Schroeder spent last summer studying in an immersive language program in Leipzig, Germany. Back in Pennsylvania, he worked as a pre-med intern with York Hospital in 2009 and also spent time at Memorial Hospital the previous year. A volunteer with Evangelical Community Hospital and a teaching assistant in the biology department on campus, Schroeder plans on attending medical school after graduation.
On the cross country course, Schroeder finished 46th at the Patriot League Championships last weekend. The senior also has a pair of top-20 performances this fall, including an 18th-place showing at the Lock Haven River Run where he scored for the Bison.
Hooper has a 3.66 GPA as a computer science major. A junior, she has earned a spot on the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll ever semester with the Orange and Blue. Her success in the classroom also contributed to Bucknell's honor as a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team in 2009. During her time not studying or training, Hooper has served as a lifeguard and swim instructor and volunteered as a youth soccer coach and Sunday School teacher in her hometown.
Hooper posted one of the best finishes of her career at the 2010 Patriot League Championships where she placed 14th overall, earning Second Team All-Patriot League honors for the first time. She began her junior campaign with back-to-back top-five finishes, placing third at the Bucknell Open and fourth at the Duquesne Tri-Meet. This year's success is not new, however, as she has scored for the Bison in all 10 of her career races.
Moniz' selection to the inaugural all-academic team is thanks in part to a 3.43 GPA as a neuroscience major. The senior co-captain has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll five times in her career as well as to the Bucknell Dean's List twice. Moniz has also contributed to the Lewisburg community during her three-plus years in the Orange and Blue, helping to organize the Running of the Bison 5K that benefits the Special Olympics.
No stranger to the Bucknell record books, Moniz continued her strong racing this fall when she placed seventh at the Patriot League Championships. The performance gave her First Team All-Patriot League honors for the first time in cross country, but she also garnered second-team honors in cross country last year and first-team accolades last spring as part of Bucknell's winning 4x800 relay. Moniz enjoyed a breakout campaign as a junior, running the second-fastest times in program history in the 1,500 meters (4:29.63), the outdoor 3,000 meters (9:41.15) and the 5,000 (17:03.74). She is also third in the indoor 3,000 meters (9:50.33), fourth in the distance medley (11:56.28) and eighth in the outdoor 4x800 relay (8:59.33).
Moniz and Hooper played a key role in Bucknell's second-place team finish at the Patriot League Championships. Although the Bison were unable to defend their league title this season, they have place among the top two squads in each of the last six years.
With their two selections, the Bucknell women's squad tied with Colgate for the most honorees from one school. The men's academic team was more balanced, as one student-athlete was chosen from each program.
Claiming the Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were Colin Eustis from American and Elise DeRoo of Colgate.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The cross country teams have seven student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first teams. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
Bucknell's season continues on Nov. 13 when it travels to University Park, Pa., for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Races at Penn State's Blue & White Golf Course are set for a 10 a.m. start.
