LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman swimmer Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday following two individual victories and a second-place showing over the weekend at the Rutgers Invitational. It is the second honor in two weeks for Nicholson, who was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week last Monday.
Nicholson had an outstanding three days at the Rutgers Invitational as he won the 200 and 400 individual medleys in Bucknell top-10 times and placed second in the 200 breaststroke. Additionally, he finished 19th in the 200 butterfly prelims and swam the second leg of the 800 free relay that finished 12th.
The only Bison to win two events over the weekend, Nicholson got things started on Friday with his victory in the 200 IM. He finished the race in 1 minute, 52.19 seconds, placing him fourth in the Bucknell record books. He shaved 2.99 seconds off his previous season best in the 200 IM entering the meet.
Nicholson followed up his win in the 200 IM with a performance that was just as impressive in the 400 IM on Saturday. He won the race in 3:59.26, good for second all-time at Bucknell. That time was 4.52 seconds faster than his previous best this season (4:03.78), which placed him fifth in the record books.
Nicholson attempted to make it three victories in three days, but had to settle for a strong second-place showing in the 200 breast on Sunday. He swam a time of 2:10.43 in the finals after touching the wall in 2:09.27 in the prelims.
After his weekend performance, Nicholson now has 11 first-place finishes across six events this year. He has finished first in the 200 IM twice and four times in the 400 IM.
Nicholson helped the Bison to a third-place finish out of eight teams at the Rutgers Invitational. He contributed 122 points to Bucknell's total of 1,421 when including his spot as part of the 800 free relay.
The Bison will be idle this coming weekend and will return to dual-meet action on Saturday, Dec. 4, when they host La Salle at Kinney Natatorium at 1 p.m.
