Bucknell Women's Cross Country Takes Eighth at ECAC Championships

BRONX, N.Y. – Bucknell women's cross country closed the books on the 2010 season, claiming eighth place in the University Division Race at the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday afternoon. Emily Liggett (Grosse Point, Mich./The Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) posted the Bison's top time on the five-kilometer course, finishing 31st overall in 19 minutes, 10 seconds.
In a field of 209 runners, Bucknell placed its first seven in the top 100. The Bison's leading four were also upperclassmen, including juniors Liggett, Melissa Smith (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) and Kirstin Rudd (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and senior Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly). Smith was 56th overall with a time of 19:40. She was followed by Foley (19:47) and Rudd (19:50) in 61st and 66th, respectively.
Behind the veteran pack was a quartet of youth in freshmen Beth Braunegg (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.), Kady Weisner (Saint Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic), Chelsea Lodato (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) and Stefanie Spanfeller (New York, N.Y./Nightingale-Bamford). Braunegg scored for the first time in her career, earning a 71st-place finish in 19:55.
The Bison's eighth place team finish came with 281 points. Earning the team title was Albany with 49. Kimberly DeLoreto of Sacred Heart took first individually with a time of 18:01.
Although Bucknell's cross country season is now over, the Bison have plenty to look forward to with track and field season on the horizon. The Orange and Blue's indoor season begins on Dec. 4 with the Bison Opener at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
