LEWISBURG, Pa. - Days after helping Bucknell volleyball extend its winning streak to three matches, Katie Baumgarten (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. Baumgarten led the Bison in kills as the team swept Lafayette and Lehigh on the road last weekend and improved its Patriot League record to 3-1.
Baumgarten opened play at Lafayette with a team-best eight kills. Her 12 digs was also a team high and marked the first time in the junior's career she reached double-digits in the defensive category.
The next night at Lehigh, Baumgarten broke her new career best with 14 digs. She also tied her personal record with 10 kills and served a pair of aces in the straight-sets victory. After both matches, Baumgarten had totaled 18 kills (3.0/set), which was first among Bison, and 26 digs (4.3/set), ranking her second on the squad.
The Bison Athlete of the Week award is the first of Baumgarten's career. It is also the first Bison Athlete of the Week nod for volleyball since Emily Sawanobori (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Kaitlin Segal claimed honors last season.
Bucknell's 3-0 victories over Lafayette and Lehigh were the latest in a three-match winning streak, which also includes a five-set win over Navy two weeks ago. The last time the Bison won at least three straight matches came in 2006.
Bucknell is now 5-11 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League this year. The Orange and Blue will try to continue their upward climb in the Patriot League standings on Friday when they host Colgate on their Dig Pink Night in support of breast cancer awareness. The 7 p.m. match in Davis Gym will also be shown live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com
