LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo senior Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player of the Week on Wednesday. The left-hander totaled a team-high 11 goals at last week's Santa Clara Rodeo that featured a Bison victory over then-No. 11 UC Davis.
In addition to Kalter's individual honor, Bucknell (10-13) moved up to a season-best No. 17 in the national rankings. The Bison had been listed tied for 20th last week.
Kalter posted four multi-goal outings over the weekend as the Bison faced three teams ranked in the top 15. He got Bucknell started in the upset of UC Davis as he netted a pair of first-quarter goals, staking the Bison to an early 2-0 advantage. Kalter finished with a team-high three goals and one assist in the victory.
Kalter opened up the weekend with four goals against Air Force, added two against No. 13 Santa Clara and then scored two more against No. 7 Pacific. He now ranks second on Bucknell in goals (38), assists (20) and points (58) this season.
A starter in all but one game this season, Kalter has also registered 17 steals, six ejections drawn and a team-high 11 field blocks.
Kalter recently became the second current Bison to eclipse the 200-point plateau for his career. He now has 140 goals, 79 assists and 219 points in his 102 career games.
Bucknell will be idle this weekend and will be back in action Nov. 5-7 at the Southern Championships in Annapolis, Md.
