No. 20 Bucknell Men's Water Polo Begins Santa Clara Rodeo with Two Losses

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) combined for 10 of Bucknell's 16 goals on the day, but the Bison men's water polo team lost a pair of games to tough opponents Saturday on the first day of the Santa Clara Rodeo. Bucknell lost its opener to Air Force by an 8-7 margin and followed that with a 13-9 loss to host No. 13 Santa Clara.
Kalter, who pushed his season goal total to 33 thanks to his six goals Saturday, posted four goals against the Falcons. Hyden produced one goal and a pair of assists in the contest, which featured 12 steals by the Bison defense, including a team-high four from starting goalie Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte).
The contest against Air Force was close throughout as the Falcons led just 4-2 at halftime and 6-5 after three periods of play.
Just a couple hours later Bucknell (9-12) jumped into the pool against the Broncos and faced a 4-1 deficit at the end of one period. The Bison never overcame that deficit despite three goals from Hyden and two more from Kalter.
Santa Clara was the first of three ranked teams the No. 20 Bison will face this weekend. They will also battle No. 7 Pacific (2:30 p.m. Eastern) and No. 11 UC Davis (7:30 p.m. Eastern) on Sunday.
