LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Bucknell cross country closed out its regular season at the Lock Haven River Run on Saturday morning. Despite the usual leaders being held out of the meet prior to the Patriot League Championships, the Bison earned some strong performances from their veterans. Charles Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) was the first Bison across the line, helping the men's squad to a third-place team finish, and Allison Donaghy (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) earned a top-10 finish for the women.
The Bison men packed a trio of seniors into the top 20, led by Murphy. Murphy finished the 10-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 31 seconds to take 10th overall. Close behind was Jake Schroeder (York, Pa./York Suburban) in 18th (26:12) and Ian Shore (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep School) in 19th (26:16). Next was yet another senior, Justin O'Brien (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), who was 21st with a time of 26:18.
Donaghy was the lone Bison woman to finish among the race's top 10. The junior was ninth overall with a time of 22:40 at six kilometers. Fellow junior Melissa Smith (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) was next in line for Bucknell. Her 12th-place finish came in a time of 22:49. Stephanie Bryan (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson), Kara Weichler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Kady Weisner (Saint Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) rounded out the scoring on the women's side.
The Bucknell men took third with 77 points in a field of five teams. They trailed Lock Haven (16) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (75) in the standings. Lock Haven claimed each of the top four individual spots on their home course with Nick Hilton taking the title in 25:02.
On the women's side, Bucknell was fifth as a unit. The field was tightly packed as first-place Indiana University (Pa.) and second-place Lock Haven were separated by a mere four points. With 76 points, third-place Mansfield was just four ahead of Bucknell's 80. Lock Haven's Lindsey Lambert earned the individual title with a time of 21:26.
Bucknell now has its eye on next weekend's Patriot League Championships. The Bison will head to Easton, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 30 to kick off their postseason. Races begin at 10 a.m.
