LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nine different Bison scored goals, including Richie Hyden and Howie Kalter who had three apiece, as Bucknell men's water polo snapped an eight-game losing streak at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday night. The Bison defeated George Washington 14-8 for their first win in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division and improved their record to 8-10 overall.
Hours after falling to No. 18 Navy, Kalter put Bucknell on the board first against the Colonials (6-14, 1-3 CWPA Southern Division). George Washington's Nate Little answered just 20 seconds later with the first of his six goals on the night. The Bison refused to panic, however, as they went on to score eight unanswered goals, taking them to a 9-1 lead in the second quarter.
Bucknell showed some major variety during that stretch. Hyden scored twice and Kalter added his second goal of the day, but Alex Nowlin, Jack Else, Brian Barron, Beau Caillouette and Paul Reamey also found the back of the net. Caillouette's score came on a five-meter penalty shot against a player other than the Colonial's keeper as George Washington's Cameron Illes was ejected on the play.
Little broke Bucknell's scoring streak, nabbing back-to-back goals with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. The Bison's Mike Kimble capped off the offense with a goal at :32, sending Bucknell to halftime with a 10-3 advantage.
Matt Napleton made five saves in the first half before making way for Miles Gilhuly. Gilhuly responded by making four saves as he and a number of the Bison's other reserves saw a bulk of the playing time in the game's final 16 minutes.
The teams stayed even through the third period with each squad netting two goals before George Washington earned its first advantage in the fourth. The Bison were never in danger of falling behind, however. Bucknell's scoring came under less-than-normal circumstances as Nowlin succeeded on a penalty shot and Spencer Richley scored on a five-on-five opportunity.
Bucknell will close out the weekend tomorrow at 1 p.m. as it hosts No. 17 Princeton on Bison Vision.
