The Bison Women's Lacrosse team is off to a running start this year. This new team is fresh and ready to shock all the teams we are scheduled to play for the 2010-2011 year. Our team is made up of 12 freshmen and 6 upperclassmen, and even with this young team we are determined and prepared to take on all of our opponents.
Fall ball opened up with the usual gauntlet running test and well-balanced lifting routine. Practices started up and we really began to click as a team. Both on and off the field, bonding events have brought the new team together as a family. Late dinners at The Bison or the cafeteria and movie nights on Fridays have let everyone get to know each other more and grow as a team. Without any teammates abroad, we have been able to get right down to business in practice and begin to learn plays as well as get to know each other's tendencies.
This past weekend at our Lock Haven play-day, we proved that the Bucknell Bison are ready to show their stuff. We went 2-1 at the play-day, beating both the ranked Lock Haven Lady Eagles as well as St. Francis, and losing a close game to Bloomsburg. Our endurance shined through as we managed to play three back-to-back to-back hour-long games and continue to give the other team a tough time.
Against Lock Haven, we had six different scorers and were well balanced on the field, forcing Lock Haven to guard each of us equally. In the game against St. Francis, Andrea Feldman, a freshman, scored her first goal ever, and against Bloomsburg Katelyn Miller scored a hat trick. Sophie Kleinert, another freshman, took the draws for us. With her placement and control we were able to crush St. Francis in draw controls. Throughout the day, we had eight caused turnovers on defense and maintained solid positioning when the other team was settled on our 12 meter. While our freshmen stepped up and played a huge role in our wins, we also still had our support from our senior goalie, Alyssa DeLorenz, who had a total of 17 saves for the day. Other upperclassmen including Julia Braun, Christina Garman, Ashley St. John, and Madison Hurwitz also helped to maintain the energy on the field and keep us moving forward throughout all three games.
It was great to see such a young team work together and put up a fight to the teams we faced. With many new faces and skill sets we are able to show what Bison lacrosse is really about. We are thrilled heading into our upcoming play-days and excited to see more wins. With more practice and working on the few things that we need to fix, the Bucknell Women's lacrosse team is prepared for a great season ahead.
