LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell football's freshman quarterback Brandon Wesley (Plano, Texas/Plano East) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week once again, it was announced by the league office on Monday. It is the second consecutive week, and fourth time overall this season, Wesley has been recognized.
Wesley completed 14 of 21 passes for 118 yards during Saturday's 31-10 loss to Penn at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. He is now a solid 78-for-134 for 770 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He already owns the Bucknell freshman record for completions and is now just 64 yards shy of tying Travis Kopp's freshman record for yards that has stood for nearly two decades.
The only Bucknell freshman quarterback to play in a season opener, Wesley ran 15 times on Saturday, gaining 47 yards. However, he was sacked six times, bringing his final rushing tally to negative yardage. He is second on the team this year in rushing, with 141 yards.
Bucknell players have won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after each game this season. Wesley earned it following contests against Duquesne, Dartmouth, Cornell and Penn, while classmate Derrick Palmer was honored following nine tackles against Marist. Current sophomore Tyler Smith was recognized following last year's season-finale victory over Holy Cross, making it six straight Bison honorees, excluding last month's bye.
Wesley and Bucknell (0-5) will open Patriot League play this Saturday, Oct. 16, at Georgetown. It will be the first time on the road for the Bison since a Sept. 11 contest at Marist.
